♫ Although a 3 year drought seems to be a terrible hardship for Israel, it was actually a sign of the mercy of God. The northern 10 tribes, once faithful to Yahweh were virtually pagan. The prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha were used by God to produce a cluster of miracles that had a special purpose in the life of the nation. 

♫ Besides the golden calves made by Jeroboam, the Israelites worshiped Ba’al, the supposed god of thunderstorms and fertility. The worship of Ba’al and his consort Asherah became popular, (not surprising since their representations were pornographic and the temples employed prostitutes of both genders and homosexuals for the use of worshippers.) The miracles of Elijah (involving drought and famine, flour, rain, and lightning mark a contest between Ba’al and Yahweh to show who really controls the seasons, the weather and harvests.

♫ The movement is made of 4 themes: 1. Ahab – Polytonal (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian) 2.The Mercy of God (Aeolian Mode) 3. Elijah - Polytonal (G Mixolydian / F Mixolydian) 4. Famine Theme (G Mixolydian over F Mixolydian). The 2 hands of the pianist are playing in different key signatures during most of movement 1.

There was no king of Judah in Zechariah’s day. The former exiles who had returned to Judah were under the authority of the Persians. Any king would have to be authorized by the higher secular authority. But Zechariah foresees a king who will enter Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. ♫ The choice of the animal here is important. The donkey is the beast of burden of the common man. (Analogous to an economic or dilapidated automobile.) Horses were primarily used by soldiers; something like a victor riding into town in a tank. Mules (Jewish law forbade the breeding of hybrid animals) were the choice of the wealthy. In Judea, they were evidently imported. David had Solomon ride into Jerusalem on his mule (something like a sports car.) But Zechariah sees Messiah will presenting Himself as king riding the transportation of the common person. On Psalm Sunday, about a week before Jesus’ death, the crowds quoted Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 as Jesus offered Himself to the nation as king. ♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. ♫ Unlike the other songs in the suite, Christ Jesus, Our Hope is not based on one specific prophecy of scripture. Instead, the song introduces and concludes both the Advent and Passion Suites. Mankind has often hoped to find a leader(s) who can make a real difference in people’s lives. Humanity yearns for justice, the end of poverty, oppression, atrocities, and war. Messiah is presented in the Hebrew Bible as the Ideal King, a person who is just, wise, powerful, capable, yet. compassionate. Messiah is not just a Jewish king who will favor Israel but will bring true prosperity to the entire earth.

♫ Isaiah 8 ends and Isaiah 9 begins with the brutal Assyrian invasion and deportation of the northern 10 tribes of Israel (586 BC). Assyria was so effective in disrupting the nation, that we call the 10 northern tribes the “lost tribes of Israel.� God sent many prophets to warn the people that they were failing to keep their covenant with God and that judgment day was coming for the nation.

♫ The tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali were located near the Sea of Galilee. They, like all the Northern people, would curse God on the day of darkness as they were killed or deported.

♫ But Isaiah sees ahead to a time when Zebulun and Naphtali will be overcome with light and joy. “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.� This prophecy was fulfilled as Jesus healed and taught in the cities of ancient Zebulun and Naphtali.

♫ based on Zechariah 11, John 10, and Matthew 27

♫ The Judah of Zechariah was marred by exiles who struggled greatly to obey God’s law. Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Malachi contain many passages that point out the sin of the people. Joshua, the current high priest, is pictured in one of Zechariah’s visions as wearing filthy apparel, desperately needing cleansing. Sheep in Bible times are grown more for their wool and milk, not so much for the slaughterhouse. Zechariah likens the leadership of Judah to shepherds and flock owners who are primarily concerned with selling meat. But there is a good shepherd who intervenes to lead the flock. He is mistreated by the owners and the shepherds and paid the price of a slave for his efforts. The good shepherd, casts the price on the floor for the potter.

♫ Zechariah is looking ahead to a time when the religious leaders of Judah were short on compassion and the needs of people. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. We see several parallel’s here in John 10. He called the religious leaders of His day, thieves and robbers, and predators. Judas Iscariot was paid the price of a slave to betray Jesus, which he threw to the ground, but was scooped to purchase a Potter’s Field!

♫ In Psalm 22, David describes the pain he is feeling in the current controversy he was facing. Deliberate hyperbole was one of the figures of speech used in ancient Jewish culture (as it is used in our culture today.) Probably much of what David is describing is somewhat metaphoric. 

But for Jesus on the cross, this Psalm all too real. Jesus literally lived Psalm 22 on the cross.

♫ Mt. Carmel is the ultimate contest between Ba’al and Yahweh. From morning until nearly sunset the 450 prophets of Ba’al did everything humanly possible to get Baal to show himself as the god of thunderstorms and fertility as the people of Israel watched. They even cut themselves to add human blood to the animal sacrifice. At twilight, Elijah rebuilt the altar of God, prepared the sacrifice and prayed. Fire from heaven (lightning) not only struck the altar but consumed it completely and evaporated the water that had drenched it. The people fell on their faces and declared “Yahweh is God! 

♫ This movement is based on four themes: 1. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Lydian Mode) 2. Elijah (Dorian Mode) 3. Ahab (Mixolydian) 4. Prophets of Ba'al (atonal).
