A perfect piece for an aspiring vocal soloist!  Text from the well known poetry of Robert Louise Stevenson. My Shadow features word painting in the vocal and accompaniment parts which highlight the text (jumping in bed, sun rising, etc).  The final section, in 'recitative' style, contrasts with the previous verses and provides textural contrast and the opportunity to 'opera it up' a bit!  The overall mood is playful and innocent.  Suitable for soprano and boy's unchanged voice.  Also excellent as a unison selection for children's choir.

A setting of two separate texts appearing on Stevenson's memorial in St. Giles Cathedral. The first part is flowing, irregular, folk-like; the second a solemn but joyful hymn.  This could be either a concert piece or used in a ceremony of remembrance.

This setting of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, The Wind, from A Child's Garden of Verses, is composed for two-part SA treble chorus with piano accompaniment. The extended tonal harmonies ask students to hear and resolve suspended and non-chord pitches within easily accessible thirds and sixths, while Part I can help develop range for the higher voices.  In terms of text, Stevenson’s poem provides mature lyrics for young musicians as well as an opportunity for cross-discipline literary learning.  A current and respected choral director who reviewed the piece referred to the piano accompaniment as fun to play and varied nicely.  In response to the piece as a whole, she also said, I do think the young choral world can use more challenging pieces..

Saxophone Trio SAT

Danse Noble by Emile Paladilhe arranged for ATB saxophone trio. Danse Noble is an elegant little piece that began life as a work for piano. The alto and tenor saxes trade melody and counter melody statements while the bari sax provides a quiet bass line. The arrangement for saxophone trio is raised one semi-tone from the original key of A to B flat. A good choice for an intermediate group of players. Moderate tempo in 3/4 time with a middle section slightly faster in the parallel minor key. The parts are very independent. Performance time is about 3.5 minutes. 
 
The late 19th century French composer Émile Paladilhe is mostly forgotten today but in his time was well respected and admired. His works were performed throughout the concert halls and opera stages of Europe. Today singers remember him for a few of songs and oboists for his “Solo for Oboe� also known as “Concertante�. Sax players may know that piece too. A transcription is included in the widely available Concert and Contest Collection for Alto Saxophone.

Trio Sonata in C is a pleasant little work by the mostly unknown German Baroque composer Johann Georg Linike. Although called a trio sonata, it does not follow the typical format of a Baroque trio sonata. Each of the three movements are quite short – think of it as a trio sonata in miniature. Together, all three movements take less than five minutes to perform. 

1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts are included for both E flat and B flat instruments. The parts may be combined as desired. The short length and moderate range of the piece make this a good choice for intermediate players. Movement 1, Allegro in C major, is in common time. Movement 2, Adagio in A minor, is in  common time. Movement 3, Vivace in C major, is in 3/4 time.

Tivoli Circus Polka by Norwegian composer, Christian Teilman arranged for saxophone quartet with flexible scoring. This piece is named after Tivoli, the famous amusement park in Copenhagen. Like much of Teilman’s light music, it has an attractive melody and jaunty rhythms.

This piece is scored for Saxophone Quartet with flexible scoring. It is intended for AATB sax quartet but has additional parts so that nearly any combination of saxes may play it. The following parts are included:

Tivoli Circus Polka is a fun little piece that's not too challenging for intermediate players. The melody passes back and forth among the three upper voices while the bass line bounces along underneath. All parts have a moderate range with the alto sax 1 having a bit wider range. The piece stays at moderate tempo in 2/4 time throughout. It has a simple ABA form with sub-themes in each section. It opens in F minor, then modulates to F major. The B section is in B-flat major then returns to F major before the recap. With all repeats, performance time is about 2.25 minutes.

Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) by Charles Gounod (after J. S. Bach) (based on music of J. S. Bach) arranged for Any Saxophone Solo and Piano. B-flat and E-flat solo sax parts are included. 

This arrangment is in the key of C major, as was the 1853 original version. Tempo is around 78 bpm. The solo part is an exercise in expressive legato playing. Some rubato may be added in the last few bars of the music. 

The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria is a popular and much-recorded setting of the Latin prayer Ave Maria. It was first published in 1853 as “Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach“. Gounod improvised an original melody that he paired with a slightly changed version of a familiar Bach Prelude (Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier). The 1853 publication is an instrumental piece. There was no text. Gounod reworked the piece in 1859, finally settling on the Latin prayer “Ave Maria” as lyrics. The new version proved to be an irresistible force. It attracted a phenomenal level of acclaim, becoming immensely popular, even improving Gounod’s faltering reputation with the contemporary public. It is a standard at holiday times, weddings, quinceañeras, church services, and other solemn occasions.

Saxophone Quintet SAATB

Suite for Saxophones based on piano music of Igor Stravinsky, arranged for saxophone quintet SAATB. Between 1915 and 1917, as an amusement for his two children, Stravinsky wrote a series of eight easy piano duets based on a variety of dance forms. Later, he orchestrated the pieces for small orchestra and arranged them into suites of four movements each. The results are outrageous, witty, and utterly charming. As always, Stravinsky outdoes himself in the inventiveness of his orchestrations, which are filled with unusual instrumental juxtapositions and surprising changes in rhythm and texture. Some of those surprising changes and textures are evident in the arrangement for saxophone quintet.
