Composed by Robert Debbaut. Contemporary. Octavo. 31 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6342191. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939403).

American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists.

Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs.

Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City.

Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

8.27 x 11.7 inches.

Cecilia Damstrom (b. 1988) is a Finland-Swedish composer and pianist with a rich production of music for choir and for chamber ensembles. Her piece for male voices, At Teasdale's, gives in three short, concentrated movements life to the American poet Sara Teasdale's beautiful poems about the sea, the night and love: At Sea, At Night and At Midnight.

Cecilia Damstrom's At Teasdele's is the winner of the 1st prize in Linkopings Studentsangare Composition Award 2016: For an artistic and through-composed suite in three movements that congenially interprets and conveys Sara Teasdale's exquisite and expressive lyrics. The composer utilises the male choir's richness and variety of possibilities, with a substantial feeling for the male voice conditions. With its personal musical language At Teasdale's has a great opportunity to appeal to both singers, and the audience..

Composed by Joseph Hasper. A Cappella,Christmas,Contemporary. Octavo. 10 pages. Joseph Hasper #442961. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734646).

The text for The Kings They Came is from the poem Christmas Carol by Sara Teasdale. Teasdale (1884–1933) published this poem in 1911 and won the Columbia Poetry Prize (which was later known as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) in 1918. A 1926 New York Times Book Review described her poetry as musical and lyric, stating MissTeasdale is first, last, and always a singer. It is in this spirit of joyous and unstudied song (as a New York Times Book Review described Teasdale’s poetry in 1915) that The Kings They Came should be sung. The music is unpretentious, tuneful, and ever joyful.

A Cycle of Love Songs is a collection of Sara Teasdale’s settings for soprano and flute. The set was commissioned in 2020 by Anima Vox Duo (Tadeu Coehlo, flute, and Carole Ott Coelho, voice) for She Can, We Can project. The set was premiered by Anima Vox Duo on March 09, 2021, at the University of North Carolina School of Arts.

This was my first time working with the texts by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933), and I was so inspired by her poetry that several more settings followed after it. All of the selected poems for this cycle were published in 1915 in the book entitled Love Songs. Teasdale’s texts indeed have inner music, and it seems like they are just calling to become songs.

Performers should take as much freedom as they want, and follow the natural flow of phrases. This cycle is all about being a duet, not one instrument accompanying another. Follow your partner for the dynamics and other nuances.

Please refer to the video by Anima Vox Duo, as this is a great example of this cycle performance: https://youtu.be/NnHrT1w0h2s?t=1177

Composed by Marina Quintanilla. Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 24 pages. Rising Tide Music Press #1064479. Published by Rising Tide Music Press (A0.1487532).

Poem by Sara Teasdale
for SSAA chorus + piano (accompaniment + vocal reduction)
Commissioned by the
American Choral Directors Association as part of The New Canon Project.

From the composer:

Inspired by her travels, Vignettes Overseas is a collection of poems published in Sara Teasdale's massively successful book of poems, Rivers to the Sea. Written during a time where women's voices were often silenced, and just one year after her marriage, Night Song at Amalfi vibrantly illustrates the stuggle to be a woman in a society that expected women to be submissive, and the stark reality that she and
many other women faced.

While women's rights have made great strides over the years, women and other minority groups still stuggle to have their voices heard. This song is for all of them.
This piece was commissioned by the New Canon Project, a partnership between the American Choral Directors Association, the American String Teachers Association, and Rising Tide Music Press, with support of the Sphinx Venture Fund. This piece is written for school-aged groups, but is accessible to choirs of all levels and challenges the choir with part independence and modal writing. This piece starts out very open and celestial, then turns dark as the reality of unending silence sets
in. There is hope, but also anger, confusion, and numbness.
