The song is connected to a 1785 story published by Johan Gabriel Lindstrom. The song describes how a mysterious fiddler came to the community near Hårgaberget or Harga mountain, and played the fiddle. The youth danced to the tune that the fiddler played and they were unable to stop. Some of the youth noticed a cloven hoof, leading them to believe the fiddler was demonic. Even as morning came, the adults noticed they were all still dancing, and the fiddler still fiddling. Later, the dancers started dropping dead from exhaustion. It is one of my all-time favourite Swedish folk songs. The text of the song is a poetic expression of longing felt for a loved-one. The arrangement goes in a slow waltz with a slight swing and would work well as a dance for romantic couples.The arrangement uses broken chords with many open strings which are meant to ring out while the melody floats above. The open strings in the chords give the piece a slightly modal character that is typical of many Swedish folk melodies.The notation and tabs contain extensive left and right hand fingering and is easily within reach of intermediate students of fingerstyle acoustic guitar.
