Arranged symphonic wind dectet/bass.

The Teddy Bears' Picnic is a song consisting of a melody written in 1907 by American composer John Walter Bratton, and lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy. It remains popular in the United Kingdom as a children's song, having been recorded by numerous artists over the decades. Kennedy lived at Staplegrove Elm and is buried in Staplegrove Church, in Taunton, Somerset, England. Local folklore has it that the small wooded area between the church and Staplegrove Scout Hut was the inspiration for his lyrics.

Bratton composed and personally copyrighted it in 1907, and then assigned the copyright to M. Witmark & Sons, New York City, who published it later that year as The Teddy Bears Picnic: Characteristic Two Step, according to the first page of the published piano score, as well as the orchestral parts Witmark published in an arrangement by Frank Saddler. However, the illustrated sheet music cover gives the title as THE TEDDY BEARS' PICNIC, with apostrophe on BEARS and no genre descriptor. Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy wrote the now familiar lyrics for it in 1932.

After Bratton wrote The Teddy Bears' Picnic, however, many people felt that the composer plagiarized portions of the melody. Music aficionados pointed out in particular that the refrain echoed the theme from Robert Browne Hall's 1895 Death or Glory March. Nevertheless, charges were not filed and Bratton's song still has the same tune it had in 1907.

Composed by John Walter Bratton. Arranged by G L Harvey. Children,Standards,Traditional. Score and parts. 31 pages. G L Harvey #5755437. Published by G L Harvey (A0.805913).

This popular hit, originally written for Piano in 1907, has been arranged as a duet for virtually any combination of wind players. The PDF contains 15 parts covering a range of clefs and keys to cater for most practical combinations. There is also a Lead Sheet (and extra Lead Sheet Capo 1)  with chords to enable further accompaniment, perhaps on Guitar or Ukulele.  The technical demands of Part 1 is about intermediate level and part 2 is slightly easier (about grade 5 & 4 ABRSM respectively).  Brass players in particular however, can take advantage of the parts in multiple keys. Two trumpet players for example could select a lower key making Part 1 slightly easier (see example combination instructions on the title page).

This novelty piece for three bass trombones is a silly version of a children’s song I fondly remember my mom singing to me when I was little. It was written in 2019 for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir’s (Madison, WI) Ice Cream Social-always an enjoyable chance for the group to play decidedly non-church music. It was written as a feature for the two other bass trombonists in the group-Isaac Weber and Mike Wathen-and me.

By Ellen Harle. By John W. Bratton. Arranged by Ellen Harle. 20th Century,Children. Score and parts. 27 pages. Fireworks Music #754232. Published by Fireworks Music (A0.1153962).

This charming and popular children's song is arranged here for strings. It would work for quartet (2 violins, viola or violin 3, and cello), String Quintet with the inclusion of double bass, or string orchestra or ensemble. The included violin 3 part is primarily viola in treble clef, if a viola player is not available. The violin 1 part includes some third position work, and a simplified cello part is also included if the player finds the string crossings too difficult. This would suit intermediate level players and therefore suitable for school chamber groups and ensembles. It is particularly enjoyable repertoire for more senior students to perform to younger students. Purchase includes score and all parts. Please enjoy, and remember: don't go into the woods alone!
