The History of the Four Immortal Chaplains and the United States Army Hymn

During World War II, four Army chaplains met at the Army Chaplains School at Harvard University. ?ere, they received training for their assignments in the European theater. They then boarded and sailed on the United States Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester to report to their new assignments.

The USAT Dorchester left New York on January 23, 1943, en route to Greenland. She carried about 900 military personnel and was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba, and Comanche. During the early morning hours of February 3, 1943, the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223 off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.

As the Dorchester sank on that fateful day of February 3, 1943, the four Army chaplains on board helped their soldiers board lifeboats as they handed out life jackets. When they ran out of life jackets, the chaplains gave their own life jackets to four soldiers that they might live. Then the chaplains joined arms and prayed as they went down with the Dorchester.

These were young chaplains, new to the Army, holding the rank of first lieutenant. They included Methodist minister Reverend George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic priest Father John P. Washington, and Reformed Church in America minister Reverend Clark V. Poling. ?e four chaplains were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart.

Chaplain (MAJ) James F. Linzey, USA (Ret.), who was one of four military chaplains in his family, composed the United States Army Hymn,
Eternal Father, Hear Our Prayer, in remembrance of the Four Immortal Chaplains on board the Dorchester. Also, James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

History of the United States Air Force and the Air Force Hymn

On September 18, 1947, the National Security Act of 1947 created the National Military Establishment and the United States Air Force. The National Military Establishment later became the Department of Defense. The Air Force was part of the Army Air Corps since August 1, 1907. It had the oversight of military aviation for land-based operations.

The organizational development of the Air Force is as follows: Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps (1 August 1907 18 July 1914), Aviation Section, Signal Corps (18 July 1914 20 May 1918), Division of Military Aeronautics (20 May 1918 24 May 1918), Air Service, U.S. Army (24 May 1918 2 July 1926), U.S. Army Air Corps (2 July 1926 20 June 1941), the U.S. Army Air Forces (20 June 1941 17 September 1947), and the United States Air Force, 18 September 1947 present), and the separation of the United States Air Force Space Command as the United States Space Force (20 December 2019 present).

The Air Force has been involved in World War 1, World War II, the Cold War and the Korean conflict, the Vietnam conflict, combat operations such as Operation Eagle Claw, the invasion of Grenada (1983), the bombing of Libya (1986), the invasion of Panama (1989), Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Bosnia and Kosovo, the Global War on Terror, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mary Christian Dundas Hamilton (24 May 1850 - 10 June 1943) was a Scottish writer and poet. She is known for writing A Hymn for Aviators (1915). It was known as
Lord, Guard and Guide the Men Who Fly, and also as the United States Air Force Hymn. It was set to Mozart's Dona Nobis Pacem, a waltz. Various phrases and verses were used in the United States Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, and alluded to in the United States Space Force Hymn, Creator of the Universe.

Former Air Force Chaplain and Officer, theologian and hymnist, Major James F. Linzey (Ret.), believed that military hymns should not be waltzes. So he converted the timing of Mozarts piece to four-four timing, giving the Air Force Hymn traditional timing that is fit for a hymn. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

Anthem of the “All nations will be perished, and the world must unite”

Colorful Number One Scholar October 3, 2023

The world was originally no any nations.
The land was plundered and divided into territories.
Colonize first after occupying a frontier;
If you had formed a country, you must raise an army.
Warfare is a deadly killing weapon,
The saints use it when there are no other satisfied ways.
Today's world is in ruins.
The United States, China, Russia, and European Union compete.
Each of them wants to dominate the world.
They don't want to be cooperative diligently;
They use the dirty tricks instead;
They use every possible means for cunning.
When the saint raises only one foot high,
While the devil has already jumped ten feet tall.
They are blind at what the Doomsday is coming,
They still love to rob and snatch.
They would like to die together;
You die and I die, too.
What a shame.
The human body contains cells.
All cells have membranes.
With membranes they know how to be selfish.
Selfish genes have played an important role in evolution.
Love yourself and your country is only a low level of selfishness;
Sacrifices oneself and destroys countries are the high level of selfishness:
The world must be for the global public welfare.
It is really a kind of selfish seeking benefit only for human beings.
Looking at the world today,
Among Emperors, Empresses, Presidents and Chairmen,
No one is worthy of become a future world leader.
They only know how to love themselves
And their countries’ benefits in a naive way;
They dislike to destroy all the countries,
They don’t practice the rule for world population’s commonwealth,
Knowing not the brilliance patriotism in the past
Has becoming the hurdles on the road to globalization.
How sad, how sad!
Preparing to establish the “World Leadership Education Institute”.
It should be put to the top priority.
I advise you not to be too innocent,
All nations will be perished;
This is a historical march.
Ah, ha, oh, eh, yah!
Home sapiensism needs to be promoted.
The world must be unified.

The United States Army Signal Corps (USASC) is a branch of the United States Army that creates and manages communications and information systems for the command and control of combined arms forces. It was established in 1860, the brainchild of Major Albert J. Myer, and had an important role in the American Civil War. Over its history, it had the initial responsibility for portfolios and new technologies that were eventually transferred to other U.S. government entities. Such responsibilities included military intelligence, weather forecasting, and aviation.

TAPS  A Remembrance
Bb Solo Trumpet, Narrator, Piano/Organ/Orchestra, optional SATB Choir  > 2:00
TAPS - A Remembrance is ideal for the kinds of brief but important Memorial Day and/or Independence Day observances so often called for in our time.
The poignant narration recalls the story of United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark playing the bugle call know today as Taps for the interment of President John F. Kennedy (November of 1963). As author William Manchester later wrote, “The 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob” that the whole world heard, and that remains part of our national heritage.
The background arrangement (optionally with chorus) heightens the emotion of the story until both give way to a regulation trumpet solo version that includes the grace note error and fades at the end. The orchestration is done in a 4 Part + format that lends itself to optional performance by any section of the orchestra (originally for brass alone).
The choral octavo carries the complete narration (also see below) with accompaniment (playable by/adaptable to organ) and the solo trumpet part (all that’s really needed to perform the piece) along with permission to reproduce the octavo for optional choir/ensemble.
The choral writing involves divisi only at two easily sung cadence points.
And, it can be performed by just the brass and the narrator.
For those who may not know the story:

----
NARRATOR:  Since the mid 1800s the bugle call known today as Taps has heralded rest for the weary, as well as comfort and encouragement in times of deep personal and collective grief.*
* music begins
At about 3:00 p.m. on November 24th 1963, as the nation mourned the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark raised his bugle at Arlington National Cemetery [† with thoughts of I Corinthians 15:51 in mind, “The trumpet shall sound”].
Clearly broadcast throughout the country and around the world, the 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob” as author William Manchester put it. But, as another observer** noted: “Like the crack in the Liberty Bell, it remains part of our
national heritage.”

My school, in which I taught, had a number of assembly programs, including a yearly Veteran's Day
commemoration, where the band performed. Of course, I had to select a medley of appropriate pieces, but some
how could not assemble compositions that were both short enough and very playable by my group. That left me
with the task of writing my own arrangement of military anthems.
I pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. What is conspicuously missing, however, is
the United States Air Force Song. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?
I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it to
be a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the music
teacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the final
arrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

By United States Army. By John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic,Traditional. 9 pages. Aaron Hettinga #768155. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1167803).

The official U.S. Army song, commonly known as “The Caissons Go Rolling Along” or “The Army Goes Rolling Along,” predates John Philip Sousa’s version by several years. In 1917, Sousa composed “The U.S. Field Artillery March” containing the Caisson Song’s melody as the basis for the march’s TRIO section.

This arrangement makes use of Sousa’s introduction, then remains faithful to his harmonic treatment and the flavors of the melody and accompaniments throughout. While each of the four parts do feature some small technical requirements, they remain at an intermediate level where even less-experienced players should be able to pull them off handily.

While originally scored here for SATB Saxophone quartet, a sub part to play the top line on Alto sax is also included.

This arrangement is a great vehicle to share some patriotic flair on your patriotic Saxophone quartet program!

Note: the live demo recording is made from a brass quintet version of this same basic arrangement.
