Writing this duet for flute and oboe//English Horn began immediately after the massacre at the Pulse night club in Orlando, FL in June 2016. The fate which befell those innocent people was undeserving in spite of where they were and who they were. I expressed my anger and outrage in this music to honor the memory of those who died that night.

The first movement is a bit off-kilter; there is something in the air. The second movement is evocative of having a nice evening and enjoying time with friends. As the the third movement begins, the music depicts something ominous coming which crescendos to the flute and oboe a second apart representing screams. My intent with the prior statement is not to relive the horrors of that evening. I wanted to respectfully represent what happened. I wanted the performers in addition to interpreting my music to have an active role in the composition in which the flute and oboe engage in an improvisation to represent the rampage and their outrage. The remainder of the final movement gradually slows as the flute and oboe notes are sustained and ascending to a quiet and peaceful end with the unspoken message nothing will keep us down. .

The beautiful and haunting poem Fire and Sleet and Candlelight laments a wasted life. This original piece is reminiscent of the choral standards “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child� and “Wayfaring Stranger,� evoking what I can hope are similar thrilling feelings of angst and terror for singer, conductor, and listener.  Text by poet Elinor Wylie (1885-1928), born in Somerville, New Jersey.

This text has been adapted from Mark Twain's The War Prayer, which he wrote in 1904-5 to protest America’s involvement in the Spanish-American War. His family convinced him to keep if from publication, fearing it was too controversial. Published after his death, Twain makes the case that if God causes all things to happen and blesses select people, then He must also, willingly, deny others his blessing. It is the other side of prayer, the unspoken side, which Twain so brilliantly characterized in The War Prayer. Duration 8:00.

Mientras dormías (Spanish for While You Were Sleeping) is a simple neoclassical and postmodern lullaby, composed (in its original version) for solo piano. (To say of a lullaby that it is simple is quite foreseeable: the striking thing would be a complex lullaby.)

The unspoken interlocutor, the you alluded to, can be anyone: son, lover, pet ... but also a sleeping audience whom you try to shake with your harangue, informing them of what they have just lost, of what happened while they were distracted.

Technically, it is a simple deconstruction or recontextualization of the famous Wiegenlied by Johannes Brahms. Hence the categorization of postmodern, due to the use of the camouflaged quotation as an essential structuring device (although a well-prepared musicologist should better not read this).

Character: gentle andante (walking).
