3.27.90 (Solo for vibraphone), was written for the French percussionist, Jean-Charles François and premiered by him at the Maison des Cultures du Monde in Paris, France on May 29, 1990. Each of the three movements evokes a different musical ambiance. Slow and meditative for movements 1 & 3 and lively and energetic for the 2nd movement. The player will need four vibraphone mallets. The duration is about 15 minutes.

Oh Holy Night is a beautiful Christmas piece. The wonderful melody and rich harmonies are brought to life in this duet for Marimba and Vibraphone. The rich wooden marimba bars provide a glorious tone as the moving bass part supports the melody when played by the vibraphone. The marimba part can be played on a 4 1/3 octave marimba and switches between treble clef and bass clef. Both parts can be played with 2 mallets or the marimba part can be played with 4 mallets if the performer prefers.

This work is an adaptation of a longer piece composed for the selection rounds of the Sydney International Piano Competition. It was originally scored for five pianos playing simultaneously, hence the derby idea whereby each piano was pitted against the other in a rambunctious race till the very end ! It explores the less common use of the vibraphone for extended passages with the pedal kept up to create a staccato effect, intricate weaving melodic lines using unconventional scales and sophisticated rhythmic interplay between the vibraphone and piano parts. It is included in the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Syllabus for Percussion from Grade 7.
