The constellation Sculptor represents the sculptor’s studio with a table, mallet and two chisels lying beside a carved head. It is one of the fourteen southern constellations named by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. It contains some interesting deep sky objects such as the Sculptor Galaxy which was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, who had a career first as a soprano and then as an astronomer. She was the first professional female astronomer, and (along with her brother William) discovered several comets and nebulae. They were working together when he discovered the planet Uranus. Like the other Lacaille constellation pieces, this one uses a twentieth century musical style. This Intermediate Piano Solo is based on a blues chord progression and uses the blues scale. Sagitta, the Arrow was catalogued by Ptolemy in the second century. There are several myths associated with this arrow. One is the tale of Prometheus, who created people out of clay and gave them fire. This angered Zeus, who chained Prometheus to a rock on Mount Kazbegi in the Caucasus. Daily an eagle feasted on his liver, which regrew each night. Heracles (Hercules) killed the eagle, freeing Prometheus from this torture. The composer Alexander Scriabin created a synthetic scale later known as the Prometheus scale and its related chord, also called the Mystic Chord, which feature in this short piece for the third smallest constellation in the night sky. Originally called Stellio by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius, it is a small faint constellation that represents a starred agama, a grey lizard with yellow or orange spots on its back or side that can change colour slightly in response to temperature or mood. This piece is built on a scale devised by Messiaen which proceeds in a pattern of tone then two semitones, and opens and closes with his Chord of Resonance built on this third mode of limited transposition. Delicate staccato contrasting with legato playing requires a sensitive touch. Ophiuchus is known as the healer and is based on Ascelpius, son of Apollo. He holds the head and tail of the constellation Serpens, and in some illustrations the snake is wrapped around his waist. This gives us the symbol physicians use today. Ascelpius was such a successful healer, he even brought people back from the dead. He learned his healing arts from Chiron (constellation Centaurus), but learned the resurrection trick by watching a snake place a particular herb upon the body of a dead snake which miraculously returned to life. Ascelpius used the same herb on people. Hades worried that his realm would suffer loss of souls because of the healing power of Ascelpius, so Zeus killed him and placed him in the sky as a constellation. This piece was written in the same key as Serpens, Phrygian Major. Neither of them were permitted to look back, but at the final moment, as he entered the living world, he looked back. Eurydice had not yet taken the final step out of the Underworld, and so was lost to him forever. After his death, his lyre was placed in the night sky by the Muses.
