She recently found a boyfriend who is also a cellist, Bennet Huang. They have been dinner guests at our home many times. So, when I ran out of projects to do in the early summer of 2022, I decided to write a duo of two cellos for them. In my search for inspiration, I discovered that Ermmano Wolf-Ferrari (1876 - 1948) wrote a number of nice duets for violin and cello. The one that really intrigued me was his Introduzione e balletto. And since my wife, Kristin Beckwith, is a ballet teacher who has only recently retired from teaching at the Boston Ballet School, I thought this would be a nice gesture to dedicate this work to her. Time: 5:10 On Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2011, Robert Van Horne, pianist and composer was invited to a special meeting of Bay Area business people. Their purpose - wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that Robert compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan, know they would not be forgotten. I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting, Robert says, that I went home and composed a new piece of music with the title: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece.
