Composed by Giorgio Gentili. Arranged by Snakewood Editions. Baroque,Classical. Score. 25 pages. Sneakwood Editions #859373. Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.1266695).

Giorgio Gentili was surely one of the most influential musicians in Venice at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1702, or even earlier, he was appointed maestro di instromenti at the prestigious Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, where musicians such as Legrenzi, Biffi and Galuppi worked. In 1689 he became a violinist in the San Marco orchestra and shortly after, in 1691, he was appointed concertmaster. Under his direction he had musicians like Veracini or Giovanni Battista Vivaldi and Antonio Vivaldi. Surely this fact is related to the notable influence of Gentili's concerti on those of Antonio Vivaldi.

Gentili's departure from the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in 1717 coincides with the departure to Dresden of other famous Venetian musicians such as Lotti, which gives rise to the suspicion that Gentili was also hired along with these musicians by the Elector of Saxony during his trip to Italy.

Gentili was one of those rare musicians who only played instrumental music, at least as far as we know. Gentili published six volumes of music:

Op. 1. Suonate a tre, 1701

Op. 2. Concerti da camera a tre, 1702

Op. 3. Capricci da camera a violino e violoncello o cimbalo, 1707

Op. 4. Suonate a tre (lost)

Op. 5. Concerti a quattro e cinque, 1708

Op. 6. Concerti a quattro, 1716

Apart from this work, we find two interesting manuscripts in the Library of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice that contain the only two known sonatas for cello and basso continuo by Gentili.

SKU: A0.612797

Composed by Jean Baptiste Loeillet of Ghent (1688 ā€“ 1720). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Standards,Traditional,Wedding. Score. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #221991. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.612797).

John Baptist Loeillet, a Flemish Baroque composer, wrote six sonatas for flute and basso continuo in his Op. 5 No. 2. This work is widely considered to be some of his most significant compositions, and they are still performed today.

The sonatas are divided into three movements each, with two slow movements and one faster one. The flute part is very demanding, as Loeillet often wrote in the high register, and the accompanying basso continuo part provides a solid foundation for the piece. The music has an emotional intensity that was characteristic of the Baroque era, and it features various ornamentations, like trills and mordents. The influence of Corelli can be heard in the contrapuntal textures, and the melodic lines are often based on the scales and modes of the period.

Loeillet's Op. 5 No. 2 is a beautiful and captivating work, and its timelessness is a testament to its quality. It has been transcribed and adapted for other instruments, and it remains a popular choice for many classical musicians.

Composed by Marin Marais. Arranged by Elizabeth Thompson. Baroque,Classical. Score. 34 pages. Elizabeth Thompson #6323171. Published by Elizabeth Thompson (A0.1016693).

The Suite for 2 Cellos consists of six dance movements excerpted from Marin Marais' Pieces de viole, Livre III (Paris, France 1711). Originally for viola da gamba, this suite is transcribed into bass and tenor clefs so as to be easily read by the modern cellist. All of the movements are appealing with or without ornamentation, which makes the Suite a flexible educational tool for players at many levels.

This edition includes a reprint of the original manuscript (also available online from the Bibliotheque nationale de France). This edition also includes the figured bass part transcribed and printed in modern typeset.

Marais' charming suite may be successfully performed by 2 cellos (intermediate and advanced intermediate), solo cello and keyboard (player must read figured bass), or solo cello with basso continuo team.
