She recently found a boyfriend who is also a cellist, Bennet Huang. They have been dinner guests at our home many times. So, when I ran out of projects to do in the early summer of 2022, I decided to write a duo of two cellos for them. In my search for inspiration, I discovered that Ermmano Wolf-Ferrari (1876 - 1948) wrote a number of nice duets for violin and cello. The one that really intrigued me was his Introduzione e balletto. And since my wife, Kristin Beckwith, is a ballet teacher who has only recently retired from teaching at the Boston Ballet School, I thought this would be a nice gesture to dedicate this work to her. The Wolf-Ferrari is only a two-movement work, hence the title's balletto reference. Mine will be a multi-movement work with many balletti in it. I. Introduzione II. Valser III. Bolero IV. The pleasingness of the Lied Ohne Worte is so compelling that anyone of the same mind will find a way to play my Cello 2 part. Making an arrangement for Cello Duet was not part of my plan until I happened to desire a harmony to play along with. What I noticed was something that nearly arranged itself. I set to work immediately and several revisions later, I am pleased to say there is now a version of this amazing Song Without Words for two cellos. I was inspired to create this suite after the horrendous Paris attacks in 2015, to show our solidarity with French, and love for their music. I originally made an arrangement for string orchestra designed to be played by groups on different ability levels.  This arrangement for two violas  is intended for very advanced students, skilled amateurs, or professionals. I have not included any fingerings so as to leave this to the artistic choice of each performer. The arrangement includes seven selections: Bizet’s Carmen and L'Arésienne, Alouette, Frère Jacques, Offenbach’s Can-Can, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and La Marseillaise (French National Anthem) by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle. There are also brief quotes from Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and Schumann's Two Grenadiers. The entire suite is approximately eight minutes in length. Their purpose - wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that Robert compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan, know they would not be forgotten. I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting, Robert says, that I went home and composed a new piece of music with the title: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC.
