This arrangement of the classic Christmas carol for brass quintet is a three section showcase piece. The opening is lilting and harmonically open. The middle section picks up the pace with the first trumpet holding the melody. In the last section the ensemble becomes more full and adds an ornamental line in the first trumpet, now playing Piccolo Trumpet in A. This would be a great opener or closer for a holiday concert.

Return Tickets is a two-movement work that presents the audience with two short, musical journeys. Both movements rely on slowly unfolding processes that gradually break the starting musical material and then, over time, re-forge a new version of that opening music. In this way, it presents two cyclic journeys for the listener to experience. This work is somewhat challenging for the ensemble and is also more complex harmonically. As a result, it would be most suitable for somewhat experienced or adventurous concert-goers. The score is written for two trumpets, horn, trombone and bass trombone, though the bass trombone part would also be suitable for tuba. Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.
