The song was among his biggest hits, earning a gold record and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week, This arrangement follows the original version closely with a few added contrapuntal lines to add motion.  The trumpet 1 part goes to a written A above the staff but only as an option to the lower octave.  The trombone/sub for horn part goes to hi A above the staff.  This is a real crowd pleaser to boomers but will be recognized by all generations.

A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the alto slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them. Enjoy yourselves!

The first section follows a more traditional harmonization of the melody with the trumpets providing an ornamental statement of the Gloria. The trombone takes over the melody at the key change, ultimately handing it off to the horn for the final Gloria to bring the piece to a close. The trumpets frequently provide an ornamental harmony that floats above the rest of the ensemble, with trombone adding to this in the final bars of the piece. This arrangement would be an exciting addition to any holiday concert. Accessible and challenging for each member of the ensemble.

The first performance of the quintet took place at Eastfield College with Dr. Oscar Passley performing and conducting.
