Two Brass Quintets - Intermediate - Digital Download.  This selection, Hodie Christus Natus Est (Today Christ is Born), was originally a vocal motet written by Jan P. Sweelinck and has been arranged for two Brass Quintets, each consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone (or Euphonium), and 1 Tuba, by Regis Bookshar. I envision this arrangement to be performed antiphonally. It is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services but could also be performed for other festive occasions as well and is suitable for high school or college students. Included is a score and a complete set of parts (44 pages). Canzon in Echo Duodecimi Toni á 10 was published as part of Gabrieli's Sacre Symphoniae of 1597, a collection of pieces including motets, canzonas, and sonatas for various instrumental groups. Gabrieli used the layout of his musical home, the San Marco Church in Venice with its two choir lofts facing each other, to create the first spatial or antiphonal music for early brass instruments, cornetti, and sackbuts.

Maestro Fabrizio Bugani has done a wonderful job of editing this almost 4-minute work for a double brass choir of 10 instruments (two brass quintets). Included are numerous substitute parts which include Trumpets in C, Horns, and Alto Trombones. If one wishes a pure cylindrical choir; that can be achieved by using the Alto Trombones in place of the conical Horns.

This edition is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and is pitched in the key of B-flat, down a step from the original.

Instrumentation is for double brass quintets of 4 B-flat Trumpets, 2 Horns and 4 Trombones.

Trilogy (for Double Brass Quintet) is a three-section work from American composer P. F. Strohm. This setting of the work is scored for a 10-part ensemble, comprised of two brass quintets, one using tuba and one using bass trombone. The antiphonal scoring with the two quintets makes the work ideal for brass sections looking for a showcase piece. The sound of the piece is tonal, ranging from quiet contemplation to thundering assertion. It opens with a chorale-like 3/2 that lasts about four minutes, moving into a powerful three-and-a-half minute incantation, then bursts into a two-and-a-half minute dance in 7/4. Trilogy is an exciting work for contest or concert, and has a Medium to Medium-Advanced level of difficulty. Total performance time is around 10:00. Member, ASCAP.

Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Quintet consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba. Two Trumpets and the French Horn play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the Trombone and Tuba. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but another version is also available, if you prefer, in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear.
