This high-energy piece was  published in 1976 by Shawnee Press, Inc. and performed throughout the nation. The work for large ensemble including full sections of brass plus percussion. The new quintet version makes is possible to play the work without the percussion and with single performers of each instrument.  I transcribed most section and rearranged the voicings in some sections to work better for the small group. Gabriel's Message (The Angel Gabriel to Heaven Came) is a folk carol from the Basque Country, the region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees Mountains in adjacent parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. A vernacular paraphrase of the 13th/14th-century Latin carol, Angelus ad virginem, the text was translated from Basque and paraphrased into English by the Anglican priest and scholar Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924). Commonly sung at Advent and Christmas, Gabriel's Message quotes the biblical account of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) in its opening lines:The angel Gabriel from heaven came,his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary,most highly favoured lady. It comes from the ballet El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla, and has been one of my favorite arrangements that I’ve ever done. The trumpets are split between C Trumpet and B-flat Trumpet, and there is a Bass Trombone part instead of a Tuba part that would normally occur when combining two Brass Quintets together. When it was originally performed (see the video below) I gave the percussionist the score and let her have at it since I had no idea how to write for percussion at the time. Since then I’ve learned that skill and added two percussion parts to the piece. The first one splits Snare Drum and Bass Drum between two people, and the other has Crash Cymbals and Castanets, which can be played by one person. I view these percussion parts as optional, but they are fun and add quite a bit to the piece.
