A canção foi composta em 1962 e inspirada na bela e jovem Helô Pinheiro, que na época tinha 17 anos. A primeira gravação comercial ocorreu no mesmo ano, por Pery Ribeiro, e uma versão em língua inglesa foi escrita no ano seguinte por Norman Gimbel.
