I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces popular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the lower parts after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st TRUMPET. All in A minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851.The work, Verdi's sixteenth in the genre, is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.Many famous arias, and the quartet are among the many lovely moments captured in this arrangement. The lyrics are originally written in erzgebirgisch a central-german dialect spoken mainly in the central Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in Saxony. The traditional song is about Feierabend meaning quitting time or the end of work. The sentimental melody often gets performed at funerals but also works really well as the last piece of a concert. This arrangement helps bringing out the emotional core of the traditional melody with rich and colourful harmonies. It also features a trombone solo at the beginning which brings back the sentimental lonelyness of the original song.

She marries the Sultan in order to save all future young women from this fate. She tells the Sultan fascinating stories, leaving him in such suspense each night that he can't execute her the next morning for fear of not hearing the end of the story. After 1,001 of these well-told tales, the Sultan relents.
