A great baseball piece of music! John Philip Sousa was a great fan of baseball. He played the game and even wrote article about America’s Pastime. Sousa wrote the march THE NATIONAL GAME at the behest of Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the Commissioner of Baseball. For music and sports scholars and aficionados the years 1900-1920 are considered the golden age of the John Philip Sousa Band and baseball in America. The 1908 World Series is considered the greatest and most controversial baseball series of the twentieth century and the Sousa Band’s World Tour of 1910-1911 is undoubtedly one of the most unique music public relations efforts by a single individual to introduce the early twentieth-century world to American music, culture and baseball. John Philip Sousa’s band also served as his baseball team whenever they had a chance to play a game of baseball against another team from a community in which they were performing a concert.

This popular march by John Philip Sousa has been re-scored for an 8-piece brass ensemble. The original spirit and energy of the march is retained in this well-arranged version. It sounds great with or without the percussion, however the optional drums are an essential part of the interlude. A substitute part to be played by the horns is provided.

Before he gained fame as The March King, becoming integral to the development and growth of The President's Own, John Philip Sousa was just another struggling musician who had to supplement his income by other means.  His skill as a violinist was useful for him to gain employment in theater orchestras, and he wrote songs and dance tunes for other entertainers.  This song, written with a jaunty early ragtime feel has been arranged for brass quintet, and will become a popular addition to any brass recital.

Written in 1922 , The Serenaders is the first movement of a little known suite titled Impressions - At the Movies by John Phillip Sousa. Originally scored for military band, The Serenaders is a delightful musical depiction of a college student trying to woo co-eds at a neighboring university. Subsequent movements include: The Crafty Villain and the Timid Maid and Balance All and Swing Partners.

Transcribed for double brass quintet, the piece retains it’s exuberance and flair for whimsy and evokes the era of Sunday afternoon concerts in the park. From Herbert L. Clarke-like cornet solos/cadenzas and quintet duels to rousing tutti sections, this is an all out crowd pleaser. Only Sousa sounds like this!
