The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Holly Gornik, among others. The theme has been called unforgettable and a celebrated oboe melody. If your looking for a serious, solemn piece for brass quintet, this French baroque organ masterpiece is it.  A slow introduction followed by a fugue makes this a great concert work.  The French baroque organ tradition is a bit strange, as they almost always played their fugues on the nasal-sounding oboe and bassoon stops, and didn't avoid occasional spine-straightening dissonances if their themes collided (as is the case in a couple of instances int he is work).

The Concerto in D minor by Alessandro Marcello (brother of Benedetto) is an early 18th-century work originally for oboe, strings, and continuo. The earliest surviving manuscript is actually a keyboard arrangement by J.S. Bach, BWV 974 from around 1715. The work was first published under the composer's name in 1717 in Amsterdam as a Concerto a Cinque (concerto in five parts). Keith Terrett has skillfully arranged this gorgeous 8-minute work of three movements (Fast-Slow-Fast) for brass quintet featuring the 1st Trumpet as the soloist (for Trumpet in D). He has also added some embellishments in the Baroque style. This arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is scored for Trumpet in D, Trumpet in C, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

L'Allegro con brio sostituisce l'Allegro spiritoso delle precedenti sinfonie. Si inizia con un ritmo sincopato caratterizzato da un tema breve ripetuto più volte ed infine ripreso dall'oboe in forma malinconica e delicata. In tutto il movimento il ritmo rimane serrato.Con le sue linee melodiche ad ampi balzi e i suoi vivaci soggetti musicali, questa sinfonia è caratteristica dello stile Sturm und Drang. Essa condivide alcune caratteristiche con altre sinfonie Sturm und Drang di questa epoca, ed è probabilmente ispirata dalla Sinfonia n. 39 di Joseph Haydn, anch'essa in Sol minore.
