Johann Christoph Pezel is largely unknown today, save for this short Intrada. he was actually quite influential in the development of instruments musical forms and an accomplished clarino trumpet player as well as a composer of much sacred and secular music.

This is a great opener for concerts and works well both inside and outside (and, surprisingly, when socially distanced!)

The difficulty of this piece depends almost entirely on how fast you want to take it! It is marked as Allegro, but that was a vague term in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The recording is at 120bpm, but I have heard it played as widely different as 100bpm and 140bpm.Your choice!

Sweet Polly Oliver is an English broadside ballad (Roud #367), traceable from 1840 or earlier. It is also known as Pretty Polly Oliver and has several variant sets of lyrics, set to a single anonymous melody.

It is one of the best known of a number of folk songs describing women disguising themselves as men to join the army to be with their lovers.

Půjdem Spolu do Betléma roughly translates to Let's Go Together to Bethlehem and it is a popular Czech Christmas carol. This setting is for mixed brass quartet (two trumpets, one trombone, one tuba). This tune- and this subsequent arrangement- has some musical references to an instrument sometimes called the Czech bagpipe or Dudy. Thus, there are subtle musical references to this austere instrument with brief bagpipe-like drones and a humorous portion in the middle where the player gets stuck. Ossia notes are included to help with the more challenging portions of the arrangement (particularly the involved tuba part). My apologies for the error-prone recording as my chops were not in good condition for the multi-track effort.

Dialogue (for Brass Septet) is an up-tempo, jazz-based work from American composer P. F. Strohm, arranged with tubist David Swanson for his group, Zen Brass. This setting of the work is scored for brass septet with three trumpet, three trombones (2 Ten, 1 Bass), and tuba. It employs classic big band concepts to create straight-ahead, ensemble energy. The parts trade off melodic and rhythmic figures throughout the opening. In the mid-section, the three trumpets trade solo lines, then combine in a riveting climax. The upper and lower voices then trade tight, challenging phrases as the piece rockets to a big tutti ending. Dialogue is an exciting work for ensembles looking for more modern and demanding parts.
