Půjdem Spolu do Betléma roughly translates to Let's Go Together to Bethlehem and it is a popular Czech Christmas carol. This setting is for mixed brass quartet (two trumpets, one trombone, one tuba). This tune- and this subsequent arrangement- has some musical references to an instrument sometimes called the Czech bagpipe or Dudy. Thus, there are subtle musical references to this austere instrument with brief bagpipe-like drones and a humorous portion in the middle where the player gets stuck. Ossia notes are included to help with the more challenging portions of the arrangement (particularly the involved tuba part). My apologies for the error-prone recording as my chops were not in good condition for the multi-track effort.

Blest Mary Walks Amid the Thorn (Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging) is a German folk carol that is thought to date to the 16th century. It first appears in print in 1850 as a pilgrimage song, having been spread orally in the traditionally Catholic state of Thuringia, a densely forested area in central Germany. In the 20th century, the song became popular in a version relating the story of Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, on her journey to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. The text uses the popular Medieval symbol of the rose for the Virgin Mary and speaks of roses blooming on barren thorn-wood as Mary bears her child through the forest.
