NOW, something different the second trumpet and tuba present a simple accompaniment while all the other voice, yes voices, sing the words and melody of the song! A brief conclusion, a modulations and the piece returns to the texture of the earlier statement. The a bit of tongue and check statements and a very conclusive ending.

The year 2022 marked a milestone for the United States Air Force, as the world’s greatest airpower celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance. Omaha’s classical radio station was also celebrating a milestone year with its 50th anniversary. The resulting composition, cleverly titled “On the Air,� was written to observe both momentous anniversaries. The introduction plays on a cleverly adapted four-bar rhythmic motif that repeats, each time growing in intensity, conjuring images of a radio newsroom about to air breaking news. This opening rhythm is derived from Morse code letters K, V, N, & O (__ . __ | . . . __ | __ . | __ __ __), which is Omaha’s classical radio station. The main melodic theme begins after the intense introduction, stemming from the KVNO motif, and exudes energy worthy of the greatest of celebrations, replete with trumpets punctuating the strains with fanfare-like figures. After the KVNO transition to an exciting new key, the theme occurs a second time in the trumpets before simmering down to the second theme in a slower tempo, intended to be retrospective of the last 75 and 50 years of the two celebrating entities. In homage to the conflicts, sacrifices, and losses during 75 years of Air Force history, this melancholy melody in the horn repeats in octaves with horn and tuba, contrasting with the opening jubilation. However, without starkly “snapping back� to a celebratory mood, the original theme gently makes its reentry in the form of a mellow waltz with duetting trumpets, as a hopeful look to the future. The second iteration of the waltz brings back hints of the Morse code letters in the introduction, as underlying accompaniment to build energy and drive. It pivots fully with the KVNO introductory motif that changes keys while exploding with the recapitulation of the original full theme, intensifying the celebratory mood for the present festivities. The waltz version of the theme comes back, fragmented, hinting toward a fugato treatment. The non-fugal fragmentation is laced with virtuosically ornamented accompanimental lines reminiscent of a British-style brass band, and quickly settles into a full climactic presentation of the waltz iteration. The work ends full circle, with repeated KVNO rhythmic statements, in grand fashion for a firework finale.

There is nothing more quintessentially military than the grand sound of marches at special military events. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55th�—under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song� most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio� section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweigh�, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March King�, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata form�, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march� alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55th�, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Forever�) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th� an appropriate and even artistic concert march.

Maneo [pronounced MAH-nee-oh] is a Latin word meaning I remain or I await. The concept behind this piece is the process of waiting for and working toward the fulfillment of goals and dreams that seem far off, which requires both patience and persistence. The first movement, Patience, is painfully slow and full of dense, dissonant chords that avoid resolution. Although the melody wanders through several tonal centers, in many ways it feels as though it has not gone anywhere. However, as the movement progresses to a climax, the incessant tritone dissonance finally begins to dissolve. In the second movement, Persistence, the augmented triad dominates both harmonically and melodically for much of the piece, accompanied by relentless eighth-note motion. The main theme from the first movement appears first as an accompaniment figure, and later in a more prominent melodic role in combination with other motives used throughout the movement. A contrasting, dream-like middle section represents catching a glimpse of reaching the sought-after goal, and this theme returns towards the end in a triumphant finish. The two movements are played consecutively with no pause in between.

This short piece could be fun to use for the end of a performance or as an encore.  This arrangement follows the original musical vocal and orchestral score closely, featuring each member of the quintet with a verse of the melody and on fun transition phrases.In the musical The Sound of Music, “So Long, Farewell”, is performed for dinner guests by the children of the host, Captain von Trapp.  As the children are heading off to bed, one by one they sing their goodbyes.  After the youngest barely stays awake for her final verse, the children give one final, yawning goodbye and the party guests in turn responds “goodbye” before sitting down for dinner. [Source: The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization] In this arrangement, the “So Long, Farewell” melody moves between each of the five instrumental parts, similar to how the melody in the vocal version from the musical moves from one of the children to the next as well as covers the orchestral phrases and accompaniments.

Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part. Dimension Traveler, Op. 150, for brass quintet was completed 26 Mar 2024.  When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.”  Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed.  With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77.  The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G.  Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F.  Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142.  Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée.  There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions.  Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism.  Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre.  Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba.  Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets.  However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.
