A contemporary of the famous Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt was a prolific composer of both German church and instrumental music in the mid-17th century. Taken from two of his instrumental collections written between 1636-1639, this eclectic Baroque Dance Suite (Paduan, Aria, Galliard, Courente, Mascharada) written in the tradition of English influenced suites from northern and central Germany provides plenty of solo lines for all of the players. This original overture from the post Civil War brass band era adds to Americana programming with an exciting musical alternative to the popular melody and dance arrangements played by the all-brass bands of the mid and late 19th century. This centennial musical celebration from 1876 is scored for traditional brass band instruments (E-flat and B-flat cornets, E-flat alto horn, baritone, tuba) but includes alternate parts B-flat cornet/trumpet for E-flat cornet and F horn for E-flat alto horn. Paul Peuerl, German composer and organist, was not only instrumental in developing the variation suite of dance movements, but also one of the few German composers in the Late Renaissance to compose Italianate instrumental canzons. Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man.  Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments.  Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli.  These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer.  Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. Bamboula is from Gottschalk's three Lousiana Creole Pieces, composed from 1844 to 1846 by the 19th century superstar pianist and composer born in New Orleans. The shifting moods and cakewalk characteristics made it one of his most popular and enduring works as well as a precursor to ragtime. This solo feature for a quintet's trumpeter or cornetist is from the Golden Age of concert bands at the turn of the 20th century composed by legendary Sousa Band soloist Hebert L. Clarke. Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part. Early 20th century Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's Listen to the Lambs choral anthem combines his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for brass quintet. Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation.  Always looking to improve his compositional capabilities, Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. This brass quintet arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets (alternate C trumpet parts included), horn in F (alternate flugelhorn substitute part), trombone and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.
