The Peanut Vendor (El Manisero) was written by Cuban composer Moises Simons in the late 1920s. The song sold a more than a million copies of sheet music and 78rpm records, and sparked rumbamania in the U.S. The National Recording Preservation Board recognizes it as the first American recording of an authentic Latin dance style. It has been covered in recordings something like 160 times, by Stan Kenton, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and many others.
This fairly simple arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. The tuba lays down a beat while the higher voices swap pieces of the melody. It ain't fancy, but it plays well.

Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kentonâ€™s 19-piece big band? No, not really: Â no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . . Â Well, you get the picture. Â But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style. Â And thatâ€™s what this is: Â â€œThe Peanut Vendorâ€ in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
Â Â Â MoisÃ©s Simonsâ€™ â€œEl Maniseroâ€ (â€œThe Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s. Â The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendorâ€™s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts. Â Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a â€œrumba crazeâ€ in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!). Â
Â Â Â Don AzpiazÃº and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold. Â
Â Â Â English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became â€œThe Peanut Vendor.â€ Â One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made. Â Thatâ€™s a lot of peanuts.Â
Â Â Â Stan Kenton revived â€œThe Peanut Vendorâ€ in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records. Â His version was completely instrumental. Â Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis. Â A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as â€œshrieking dissonances.â€ Â â€œThe Peanut Vendorâ€ subsequently became one of Kentonâ€™s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.
Â Â Â This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets. Â So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody. Â Kentonâ€™s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba. Â The â€œshrieking dissonancesâ€ are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone. Â The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody. Â Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style. Â Kentonâ€™s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments. Â (Donâ€™t worry; the â€œshrieking dissonancesâ€ are still there!) Â

Spanish Flea is a popular song written by Julius Wechter in the 1960s with lyrics by his wife Cissy Wechter. The original version was recorded by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Cover versions of the song have been recorded by dozens of artists worldwide.

Julius Wechter was a percussionist in Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, most notably on marimba. Spanish Flea was one of several songs he wrote for the group. It was released as an instrumental on the B-side to the single What Now My Love from their 1965 album Going Places. The album was a No. 1 hit in the U.S., and the single peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Spanish Flea featured Alpert's trumpet over a Latin rhythm backing.

The original version was recorded on August 13, 1965 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Two other songs were recorded during that session, those being And I Love Her and More And More Amor. In the United States, the song is closely associated with the long-running game show The Dating Game, for which it was played when the bachelor entered into the stage to ask questions to learn and choose which bachelorette had best suited the needs of that bachelor.

In 1882, Tchaikovsky considered creating a concert suite out of numbers from his marvelous ballet Swan Lake, which he had composed six years previously. However, he seems not to have made a final decision, and the authorship of the concert suite published after his death as Op.20a is unknown.
