Hokkaido, Op. 157, for brass quintet was completed on 3 Jun 2024.  This piece was inspired during a United States Air Force jazz band concert throughout Hokkaido in May 2024.  The concert program included the theme song from a popular TV show shot in Hokkaido titled “Kita No Kuni Kara” in which I played a verse on the flugelhorn with the passion I developed during my years playing flugel solos in the Nebraska Brass Band.  The piece fittingly has similarities to “Sakura, Op. 154” which was composed only a month earlier.  “Hokkaido” is a beautiful flugelhorn feature, sweet homage to the breathtakingly beautiful northern island of Japan, Hokkaido.  Duration: 3:15.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the English rock band The Beatles.
Released on 26 May 1967, it spent 27 weeks at number one on the Record Retailer chart in the United Kingdom and 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart in the United States.

It was lauded by critics for its innovations in songwriting, production and graphic design, for bridging a cultural divide between popular music and high art, and for reflecting the interests of contemporary youth and the counterculture.
Its release was a defining moment in 1960s pop culture, heralding the Summer of Love, while the album's reception achieved full cultural legitimisation for pop music and recognition for the medium as a genuine art form.

This is my arrangement of the opening number.

I have transposed from the original key of G to Eb to aid the brass players.

I have created a new ending for those brass quintets who wish to play the piece on it;s own, but also included the oruginal fade away ending which seques into the next track...with a little help from my friends.

Recycled from a theme from Sousa’s operetta The American Maid (The Glass Blowers). The active woodwind parts made for some difficult trumpet parts here.

On 29 November 2023, a tragic accident occurred of the shores of an island in Japan.  A CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Yokota Air Base in Tokyo crashed, killing all eight crew members.  Being stationed at Yokota as an Air Force Bandsman during that trying time, my emotions turned to music as a gift of solidarity from the PACAF Band to the grieving family members.  The completed music was delivered to my Commander a week after the shocking event.

On 15 February 2024, the Base conducted a somber memorial service for the eight heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion in the line of duty.  This piece was performed in lieu of “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony, as “Taps” was to be sounded at the Base Retreat Ceremony later that day.  The gift of music was profound.  Tears from the family members seated in the front rows flowed freely at the end of the performance, punctuated by increased sobs.  High-quality professional prints of the score and parts were paid for by the United States Air Force and gifted to families of the deceased and distinguished visitors at the memorial service.

One poignant detail was that at the performance during the memorial service, the brass quintet was augmented by a Japanese trumpet player from the nearby Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Band.  This symbolic gesture of solidarity greatly impacted the profundity of the event.

Last Full Measure, Op. 143, for brass quintet was completed 6 Dec 2023.  This composition is not to be confused with Op. 33: Last Full Measure of Devotion, for 24 trumpets.  However, in an allusion to that monumental early work, this present brass quintet’s “last measures” echo the final strain of “Taps” in memory of the eight crew members who perished.  Duration: 3:00.  Published (assigned ISMN) 7 Dec 2023 through Gilded Music Press, catalogue number GMP 3060; release date 22 Mar 2024.

Sousa wrote this march in 1889 for a Washington, D.C. Masonic lodge. The occasion was ...; wait for it ... the 24th Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. Really. I couldn't make that up. The Thunderer was said to be Sousa's wife's favorite march. It's not known who the thunderer was. Maybe she thought it was her husband. Many thank to the U.S. Marine Corps Band, whose fine Sousa transcriptions make these arrangements a little easier to pull off.

Written for the organization of the same name, Sousa said the march “…absolutely breathes the boy; it visualizes the supple step of the boy marching, and not the heavy tread of the man.� The unique Second Strain, to be whistled along with the melody, highlights this inspiration.

Basin Street Blues is a song often performed by Dixieland jazz bands, written by Spencer Williams in 1928 and recorded that year by Louis Armstrong. The verse with the lyric Won't you come along with me / To the Mississippi... was later added by Glenn Miller and Jack Teagarden.

The Basin Street of the title refers to the main street of Storyville, the red-light district of early 20th-century New Orleans, north of the French Quarter. It became a red light district in 1897.

Here's a laid back arrangement by the brilliant Erich Siebert, adapted for a brass quintet and percussion to be enjoyed by the players and the audience!

Forever And A Day is an original piece for brass quintet composed by Steve Dekker. This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.

The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.

Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes. Optional auxiliary percussion parts are included for shaker and tambourine if desired. Run time is 5:54. Enjoy!

The Fool on the Hill is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 EP and album Magical Mystery Tour. It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The lyrics describe the titular fool, a solitary figure who is not understood by others, but is actually wise. McCartney said the idea for the song was inspired by the Dutch design collective the Fool, who derived their name from the tarot card of the same name, and possibly by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The song's segment in the Magical Mystery Tour television film was shot separately from the rest of the film and without the other Beatles' knowledge. Accompanied by a professional cameraman, McCartney filmed the scene near Nice in France. In 1968, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded a cover version of the song that reached the top ten in the US. By the late 1970s, The Fool on the Hill was one of McCartney's most widely recorded ballads. A solo demo and an outtake of the song were included on the Beatles' 1996 compilation album Anthology 2.
