This solo feature for a quintet's trumpeter or cornetist is from the Golden Age of concert bands at the turn of the 20th century composed by legendary Sousa Band soloist Hebert L. Clarke. Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part. The sound file is an actual brass quintet performance of the entire arrangement and not a computer playback of the score.

“The Old Rugged Cross†was composed by the Methodist evangelist George Bennard in 1912. As with many other gospel songs, this song has found its home in both country repertoire and the New Orleans traditional repertoire. New Orleans brass bands frequently perform this song as a slow, mournful dirge at jazz funerals as the body is being taken from the church or funeral parlor to the grave site. This arrangement for Brass Quintet arranged in the New Orleans Brass Band Style, at the  Intermediate level, will definitely be a hit at you next concert or gig. The arrangement includes the following parts: Full Score, 1st and 2nd Trumpet, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set parts.

I was asked to arrange these old Cornish tunes as part of a project on the history of Tea Treat festivals for the Cornish National Music Archive.
These events were held by churches or chapels, usually to celebrate a Sunday School anniversary, and involved a procession as well as entertainment, stalls, games and refreshments. Brass Bands would have been hired to play for the procession and provide background music throughout the day and it is believed that, alongside some more military-style marches, these are the type of pieces that would have been played.
