His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the Pentecostal Hearld or Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much as Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes. Download the sheet music and play along.

This partly derivative work was written in 2024 and centers around Fumeux Fume par fumée, a secular song praising smoking, is a product of the Ars Subtillior school in France, the so-called 'avant-garde' of the 14th century. The composers of this time and place using neume notation witnessed and survived the Black Plague. In Fumeux, Jean Solage (c.1350-c.1403) experimented with different combinations of hexachords approved by the Church since the days of Guido van Arezzo (11th century). Using Fumeux as the basis of my composition, my idea was to alternate the tune with a complimentary contrapuntal responsive of my own making.
