The British Grenadiers is a marching song for the grenadier units of the British military1. The tune of the song dates from the seventeenth century and is the Regimental Quick March of the Grenadier Guards, the Honourable Artillery Company, and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers1. The song is played during Trooping the Colour, regardless of which regiment is on the parade ground2. The origins of the tune are not known, but it is believed to come from the Dutch martial tune De jonge prins van Friesland or March of the young Prince of Friesland.

Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist born on June 15, 1843, in Bergen, Norway. He came from a musical family and showed great talent for music at a young age. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, where he was exposed to the music of leading German composers, such as Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn.

Grieg composed a variety of works, including orchestral music, chamber music, songs, and piano pieces. He is best known for his composition “Peer Gynt,� which includes the popular suite “In the Hall of the Mountain King.� Other famous works by Grieg include the Piano Concerto in A Minor and the Holberg Suite.

Throughout his career, Grieg was devoted to promoting Norwegian music and culture. He was a central figure in the Norwegian music scene and worked to establish a national identity through his music.

Grieg’s influence on Norwegian music was significant, and he is considered one of the leading figures in the Norwegian Romantic movement. His music was also highly regarded by his contemporaries, including Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy.

Edvard Grieg died on September 4, 1907, in Bergen, Norway, at the age of 64. His contributions to classical music were significant and he left a lasting legacy on Norwegian and European music.

Hatikvah (The Hope), the National Anthem of Israel has been wonderfully arranged for standard brass quintet by Ran Whitley.

The text for the anthem was first written in 1878 by Naftali Herz Imber a Polish poet. Soon after, Shmuel Cohen a, a young musician living on an early kibbutz in Ottoman-ruled Palestine adapted the music from European folk melodies. The popular anthem was used along with the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 and was officially accepted by a vote of the Knesset in 2004.

Whitley's arrangement in the original key of D minor adds an optional series of variations as a bonus! Plus, the Hebrew, English translation and English transliteration are included on one page that can be reproduced for audiences to sing along with.

Appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The title and dedication tell the necessary story to outsiders.  To me and my sweet wife, however, the one-day event being celebrated represents a one-of-a-kind saga through a quarter of a century of two human lives spent together.  The epic story includes bearing and raising six wonderful children with the formation of countless memories that span a unique spectrum of the human experience.

Days after our 24th anniversary, we arrived in Japan for a three-year tour of duty for the United States Air Force.  Only our youngest of the six children accompanied Eden and me, creating an abruptly unique 25th year of marriage!

During that first year in Japan, assignments took me to many locations throughout Asia and the Pacific.  It was my goal to purchase a silver item from every location I visited, which I gratefully accomplished.  Those accumulated gifts accompanied this special heartfelt song for brass quintet, which was graciously performed by my friends and colleagues of the USAF Band of the Pacific, Pacific Brass on our anniversary, to an audience of one: my special bride.

Happy 25th Silver Anniversary, Eden!  I love you very much!  Just wait for our 50th!

This collection of short compositions for brass quintet was conceived specifically to supplement a dearth of appropriate and artistic original compositions for the young aspiring brass quintet.  These pieces are most fitting for a good high school quintet or a beginning college ensemble that wants a conquerable challenge.  With a variety of keys, styles, and tempos, they lend themselves well for deep work on the core ensemble skills of rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dynamic balance.  These brief works are also quite enjoyable for the professional quintet to perform for ever-popular school shows, or simply to read as a warmup with the focus of improving ensemble skills.  Performance time for all five pieces is approximately five minutes.

“Blackhawk” (duration 0:45) was originally composed in D-sharp minor as a melody to be used in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 39).  The quintet version is in concert D minor for more manageable execution.  This brisk four-four work is perhaps the most difficult in the collection, with demands of multiple tonguing for all the instruments as well as fairly advanced intervallic jumps.  

“Lamb of God” (duration 1:00) is one of many hymn tunes originally composed by Dr. Thrower for use in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 7: Ensemble Skills (p. 54), intended to be used to tune unisons and octaves.  As a tuning study it was published in the key of F major for B-flat trumpet, or concert E-flat major.  The quintet version retained the original key of concert E-flat.  The reverently subdued four-four tempo makes this the easiest piece in the collection, technically, though the three core ensemble skills listed in the introductory paragraph (rhythm, intonation, and balance) must still be extensively addressed.  The horn part is perhaps the most demanding in “Lamb of God,” with arpeggiated discant lines toward the end.

“Summer Solstice” (duration 1:10) was started on June 21, 2023, which was the summer solstice.  It is a bright, cheerful piece in concert F major with a lot of interest in all the parts.  One source of the title’s inspiration came from my family’s new situation living in Tokyo, Japan, where the dawn sky brightens around 4:00 AM on the longest days of the year, which obviously coincide with the summer solstice.  The 70-second piece was completed four days after conception while the long days started at their earliest.

“Triumph: Children’s March” (duration 1:00) was the catalyst for this collection.  It started as a cute little brass quintet piece in the key of concert B-flat major, to be performed for children, such as for school concerts.  The cut-time tempo is very brisk for a march, but animated little legs (or a more manageable audience activity of clapping hands) can easily handle the task.  Although the first trumpet part ends up on a high C, there is an alternate note for a more comfortable ending.

“Waltzing Puma” (duration 0:30) is an evocative title for an evocative piece.  Like “Blackhawk,” this melody was composed as a melody for Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 36).  The melodies in that series took on titles of military aircraft, and this one was the helicopter “Puma.”  Since this tune is in a fast three-four, it became the “Waltzing Puma.”  The quintet version retains the original key of concert F minor.

A brass quintet arrangement of the old classic, Stand By Me, that was sung by Ben E. King and featured in the motion picture, Stand By Me (1986).  This arrangement begins with the familiar ostinato bass line now played by the Tuba.  The Lead Trumpet then begins the melody and the 2nd Trumpet, French Horn, and Trombone join in with accompaniment.  The piece crescendos to a climax with polyphonic voicings of melody and harmonies before calming down and getting softer to end the piece.

This arrangement would be a great addition to your program to take your audience down memory lane or to educate your younger audience members on the great pop music styles of the '50's and '60's.  Enjoy!

Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (Brass Quintet - 3 Trp, 2 Trb) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Quintet consisting of three Trumpets and 2 Trombones. The three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the two Trombones. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Brass Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download. This arrangement of O Christmas Tree, or in German, O Tannenbaum, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts and recitals, and, perhaps, even church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of part (8 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.

O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.

In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Trumpets and 2 Trombones, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.

I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. This heart-wrenching aria is adored by all audiences. Even without words, the melody is tragically beautiful and brings tears to the eyes of the listener. This brass quintet arrangement features the flugelhorn (or optional trumpet) as Dido. It is basic enough on the surface that it can be played by Level 2 ensembles. But of course it can be presented by professional ensembles with first rate artistic expression and it will be the highlight of any recital program.

This piece is also short enough that it can fit beautifully into an education program without boring our younger listeners!
