Three of these seven short pieces are worthy to open any brass quintet concert or recital.  Two fanfares are too short for a concert feature but work extremely well in a ceremony or celebratory setting.  The last two short pieces aptly serve contrasting special purposes, as explained below.

“Fort Pierre Fanfare” is about 40 seconds in duration, and was composed to open the feature concert at the South Dakota Bandmasters Association convention in 2022.  Offutt Brass, from the US Air Force Heartland of America Band, was invited to perform that concert.  Before the final piece of the concert, when gifts were exchanged between the sponsor and performers, beautiful presentation copies of the sheet music were presented to the sponsor.  In performance, staging directions on the music can be extremely effective or cringy, depending on how they are conveyed.  If there is any inkling that there may be a cringe factor, ignore them, and play the fanfare already on stage.

“Enduring Freedom Fanfare” is nearly a minute of music.  It was composed as a gift for the outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Major Rafael Toro-Quiñones.  His leadership was strong and inspiring, and he held a place of high esteem among many of the fine military musicians that he led.  The Change of Command ceremony was toward the end of the Covid-19 shut-downs, so the work was not performed at the ceremony.  Chief Remley, from the command’s satellite location in Nebraska, hand-delivered some finely printed presentation copies to Major Toro-Quiñones.

“Noble Eagle Fanfare” is slightly over a minute in length, and, like “Enduring Freedom Fanfare,” was composed as a gift for another outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Captain David Neil Regner.

“Pilgrims’ Fanfare” was composed on what many Americans acknowledge as “Pioneer Day,” 24 July 2023.  Not only honoring the thousands of pioneers that settled the western United States, but also the pilgrims that voyaged across the ocean to settle in the new continent.  It is about 15 seconds in duration and is effective for any occasion in need of a magnificent fanfare.

“Flightline Fanfare,” as its title implies, was composed for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the dedication of the newly renovated flightline at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.  Unfortunately, the ceremony itself was altered last-minute, and the 15-second fanfare was not used.  However, like “Pilgrims’ Fanfare,” it is very handy for any event demanding a splash of pomp.

“American Interlude” is a soft 75-second underscore for an MC’s moving speech or dedication.  It was originally composed as a smooth segue between two moving patriotic pieces of different keys in a concert setting, but can be used in any similar appropriate situation.

“Troop 184” is dedicated to my childhood BSA Scoutmaster, Gerry Nielson, who molded me in significant ways into the man I am decades later.  It is functional music, akin to a fight song, and can be easily marched to.  Words may be crafted as a customized hiking ditty, or it can be featured before or after ceremonies as prelude or processional music.  The duration can also be customized, as there is a written optional repeat, lengthening the tune from 45 seconds to a minute and a half.

Composed by Betsy Bright. Children,Concert,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 55 pages. Bright Music Company #6247007. Published by Bright Music Company (A0.964566).

This original, 3 movement brass quintet composed by Betsy Bright conjures images of the Wild West.  The first movement opens with a nod to the Copland Americana sound, and then quickly dives into an adventurous theme that feels like a hero racing on horseback. Every instrument gets some solo features throughout the movement. The second movement, Lonesome paints the picture of a sorrow that can sink even through the most beautiful desert landscape, casting forlorn shadows in every direction. And finally, the third movement, Rowdy depicts a wild rodeo! This movement is in Rondo form, and with every return of the theme, we have the sensation of another rider bursting through the gate taking a ride on another bucking bronco.

This piece is a major crowd pleaser, whether on a standard recital or a pops program. And any individual movement works perfectly for education shows. Every player has great solo features, yet at no point is this piece tiring or physically painful in any way, so it’s super fun to play too!

An arrangement of the territorial anthem of American Samoa arranged for Brass Quintet & Percussion.

Amerika Samoa is the territorial anthem of American Samoa. Composed by Napoleon Andrew Tuiteleleapaga and written by Mariota Tiumalu Tuiasosopo, it was officially adopted in 1950.

As an American territory, its official anthem is the Star Spangled Banner (of which an official translation was made into Samoan in January, 2006.) The territorial anthem is a piece entitled Amerika Samoa, written in the native Samoan language.

Napoleon A. Tuiteleleapaga (II) (May 25, 1904 – December 25, 1988) was a prominent figure of the both Western and American Samoan culture, a lawyer and musician.

“Pony Express Trail†is the fourth substantial composition in a masterful series of “American Trails†for brass quintet. This piece commemorates the 160th year of the astounding system of stations and riders that was ingeniously devised to quickly deliver mail and other communications from America’s Missouri River frontier to the rapidly growing western territories. The music in this 4½-minute work is rambunctious, rhythmically unpredictable, and yet extremely exciting and listenable to the average audience member. The use of three woodblocks as the only percussion allude strongly to the clopping whirl of horses’ hooves, though not in a rhythmically mimicking manner. The opening motifs immediately develop into a manic ride across the Wild West, and lay the groundwork for all melodic content. These simple motifs smack of cowboy music, subtly borrowed from the movie theme to “Magnificent Seven†composed by Elmer Bernstein. Other influences for this piece include Aaron Copland’s harmonies and wide intervals, and the virtuosic brass band cornet writing of Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold. In the style of an operatic three-part overture, the middle slow section memorializes the tragic loss of 16 lives during the Paiute war in the summer of 1860. Being a rider or a station attendant for the Pony Express was perilous on any leg of the trail, but especially during that time in the Nevada Territory. In a very real way, all these men were iconic heroes of the American West.

The majority of the composition is boisterous, upbeat, exciting, and western! Though perhaps overly romanticized, those thrilling impressions are brought to the modern observer in the monuments and tributes all along the Lewis and Clark Trail. Indeed, from the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis to Floyd’s obelisk; from numerous visitors’ centers to historic markers throughout the more than 7000 miles traversed, Lewis and Clark and the others are kept in grateful memory for their inspiring work of opening the gateway to the west. Many working brass quintets throughout the nation joined a consortium of performances for the fall of 2019—particularly near September 23, as that was the date the expedition ended in Saint Louis, Missouri, where it also began. With the images of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in mind, the compositional process occurred quickly, and a draft of the full-length work was printed for a reading with Offutt Brass one week after it was begun. A final product was to be delivered to the consortium members by the end of April for enough time to bring the work to life in the fall. Within the music itself are several hidden meanings which, though imperceptible upon listening, are significant nonetheless. It will be noted that there is little rest for the players. For the span of 4’40â€, out of nearly 1000 measures of collective music, there is a total of 99 complete measures of rest shared between the performers. Throughout the expedition 33 key personnel participated, three of whom famously ring in the ears of all Americans: Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and the well-known Shoshone guide, Sacagawea. To acknowledge the arduous nature of this enormous undertaking, what little rest there is in this composition multiplies the number of explorers with the three most famous names.

Desert Excursion, Op. 158, for brass quintet was completed on 8 Jun 2024.  The videos and photos that inspired this short but compelling composition and subsequent YouTube video were all shot on 5 Jun 2023 while visiting family near the desert of eastern Utah.  Springtime in that region had been particularly wet, so the cactus flowers were in full bloom and everything that was customarily brown was green!  That glorious excursion with my wife’s sister and her husband was one of the final huzzahs in America before moving to Japan for several years.  The YouTube post of the exquisite videos and pictures was finalized and published on 16 Jun 2024, reminiscing on our one-year anniversary of being in Japan.  Duration: 1:30.

Composed by Felix Jakob Ludwig (dp) Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Gary Loyd Boren. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Romantic Period. 14 pages. Peet du Toit #976937. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1393426).

Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March in C major, written in 1842, is one of the best known of the pieces from his suite of incidental music (Op. 61) to Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is one of the most frequently used wedding marches, generally being played on a church pipe organ.

At weddings in many Western countries, this piece is commonly used as a recessional, though frequently stripped of its episodes in this context. It is frequently teamed with the Bridal Chorus from Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin, or with Jeremiah Clarke's Prince of Denmark's March, both of which are often played for the entry of the bride.

The first time that Mendelssohn's Wedding March was used at a wedding was when Dorothy Carew wed Tom Daniel at St Peter's Church, Tiverton, England, on 2 June 1847 when it was performed by organist Samuel Reay. However, it did not become popular at weddings until it was selected by Victoria, The Princess Royal for her marriage to Prince Frederick William of Prussia on 25 January 1858. The bride was the daughter of Queen Victoria, who loved Mendelssohn's music and for whom Mendelssohn often played while on his visits to Britain.

An organ on which Mendelssohn gave recitals of the Wedding March, among other works, is housed in St Ann's Church in Tottenham.

Masters of the Air is a 2024 American war drama miniseries created by John Shiban and John Orloff for Apple TV+. It is based on the 2007 book of the same name by Donald L. Miller and follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortressheavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force in eastern England during World War II. The series serves as a companion to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010).

This arrangement of the Main Title Theme is scored for standard Brass Quintet: 1st Trumpet, 2nd Trumpet, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba. The sweeping horn lines and bold brass chords make this an excellent feature number for brass ensemble.

Composed by Jean Schwartz. Arranged by Bill Wilson. 20th Century. Score and parts. 19 pages. Alexander Wilson #2071017. Published by Alexander Wilson (A0.774926).

Sahara, by Tin Pan Alley songwriter Jean Schwartz, was written in 1919, one year before the American Prohibition went into effect. The music for this song is slightly Middle Eastern in flavor, but the song, subtitled We'll Soon Be Dry Like You, is a little tongue in cheek and the music reflects that humor. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba).  Performance time is approximately 2:40.  Visit our website, www.tootsuitebrasspublishing.com, for a catalog of our arrangements available through sheetmusicplus.com.

This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters.  The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind).  In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly.  The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance.  Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play.  Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets.  Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

By Will Corbin. By Johann Strauss. Arranged by Will Corbin. March. 11 pages. Will Corbin #995844. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414074).

Johann Strauss Sr. wrote this catchy celebratory march in 1848, a month after the Count Josef Radetzky won a now long-forgotten victory in the first Italian war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Radetzky had been a leading light of the Austro-Hungarian army throughout the first half of the 19th century. It was an immediate hit, and it remains so in Austria. These days it's kind of an unofficial national anthem that involves audience participation (clapping and stomping in the appropriate loud passages) and is kind of required content in any concert program, frequently as an encore. In the U.S., it's an Oktoberfest standby. My first exposure to Radetzky came when the Stadtmusik Feldkirch, a community band, was kind enough to allow an American ex-pat to join its ranks for the couple of years we lived there. Feldkirch is a lovely medieval town in far western Austria; it borders directly on Liechtenstein. I played the tenorhorn, which is the alias for a baritone or euphonium over there.
