It was written and sung by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The lyrics describe the titular fool, a solitary figure who is not understood by others, but is actually wise. McCartney said the idea for the song was inspired by the Dutch design collective the Fool, who derived their name from the tarot card of the same name, and possibly by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.The song's segment in the Magical Mystery Tour television film was shot separately from the rest of the film and without the other Beatles' knowledge. Accompanied by a professional cameraman, McCartney filmed the scene near Nice in France. In 1968, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded a cover version of the song that reached the top ten in the US. By the late 1970s, The Fool on the Hill was one of McCartney's most widely recorded ballads. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414066). So the legend goes: Edward Eugene Bagley is on a train, touring with his family band from some Vermont backwater, when he composed National Emblem. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.

Yeah, maybe, but it was wildly popular and remains so. Never mind that there's no Kokomo in the Florida Keys. It's a town in Indiana where the surf is almost never all-time. Or maybe a private resort island in Fiji, but that was probably named after the song. And the music video for Kokomo was filmed at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World in inland Central Florida, where the surf is also never quite up.
