Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.964597 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Betsy Bright. 20th Century,Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Score and parts. 19 pages. Bright Music Company #6502377. Published by Bright Music Company (A0.964597). This John Philip Sousa march is just as exciting as his more famous marches, but it has some interesting twists that make it stand out for listeners. It's filled with enjoyable melodies and fanfares as one would expect in a Sousa march, but it begins in Bb minor and ends in Gb Major.  As with all Bright Music Company arrangements, this march has plenty of rest for the higher brass.  Duration:  2 minutesDifficulty level:  4 (advanced intermediate)   .

The Fairest of the Fair March for Brass Quintet and Optional DrumsBy John Philip Sousa Arranged by Jari VillanuevaScore 2 Trumpets in BbHorn in FTromboneTubaOptional DrumsSubstitute parts for Eb Horn and Baritone T.C .providedThe Fairest of the Fair (1908) by John Philip Sousa was composed for the annual Boston Food Fair of 1908 and is claimed that the memory of a pretty girl he had seen at an earlier fair inspired the composition. Sousa composed The Fairest of the Fair intending his Band to perform it at the annual Boston Food Fair in the fall of 1908. It is the only work of any kind that he composed that year and one of only a handful of compositions that he wrote between 1906 and 1910. He apparently completed it in New York during the summer, as the final page of the original score was signed John Philip Sousa, Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.The march almost missed its premier at the Boston Food Fair. Because of an oversight the music, which Sousa had written and scored out, did not have individual parts written out for the performers. This was discovered the day before the performance. The new composition had received much advanced publicity and it would have been an embarrassment to Sousa not to have it performed. The band’s copyist, Louis Morris, rose to the occasion and on the train to Boston stayed up and copied out the parts so the band could premier the work as advertised on September 28, 1908. In the morning when Sousa found out Morris was working all night he instructed him to finish the work and get some rest. Morris missed the concert and the premier but found an extra $50 in his next paycheck.Published by JV MUSIC Baltimore MD www.jvmusic.net https://youtu.be/KeE5dMnrevU

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1317480 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 28 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #906146. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1317480). Dedicated to Secretary of State John Milton Hay, The Diplomat was apparently composed over one of the best tenderloin steaks Sousa ever had. It is one of a few Sousa marches where, with the right emphasis, a different character jumps off the page. It is also highly nuanced, for example the added hits in the repeat of the Final Strain. Special interest may be directed to the tuba part, which is incredibly active throughout. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Diplomat was composed in 1904, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 63.

Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 30 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #976437. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1393350). Written while Sousa directed the Navy bands at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center during World War I, and dedicated “To the U.S. Navyâ€. This march showcases Sousa’s skillful layering in both the Trio and Final Strain. In this arrangement Trumpet 1 goes up to high concert C’s briefly in the trio, and was unavoidable for clarity. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Anchor and Star was composed in 1918, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 81.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

Arranged by Matthew Nunes. 19th Century,Chamber,Historic,March,Patriotic. 22 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #876587. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1285482). The Spanish War had a profound effect on Sousa, as did military life, evidenced in his march titles. Sousa is quoted as saying “A composition in march tempo must have the military instinct, and that is one reason why so few of the great composers have written successful marches. They lived in an atmosphere of peace. The roll of musketry had no meaning for them, so that quality is entirely absent from their work. The Spanish War was an inspiration to me. “The Man Behind the Gun†was a musical echo of it.â€Â This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 20 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #822019. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1225988). One of Sousa's more complex marches! Recycled from Sousa’s early operetta The Smugglers, this march was written for the Lambs Club of New York. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1320896 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 26 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #909335. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1320896). Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/.
