Written for the cancelled York Flower Festival in York, Pennsylvania (which recalls its English namesake with the symbolic white rose), Sousa incorporated themes from local composer C. C. Frick’s opera Nittaunis. 

This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own� United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The White Rose was composed in 1917, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 79.

Section titles (such as “First Strain� and “Trio�) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

The Rudolph story begins in 1939, when Montgomery Ward asked Robert May, one of its ad copywriters, to come up with a kids' book for its Christmas shoppers. The result was the now-familiar red-nosed reindeer. (For those born in later generations, Mongomery Ward was a giant, like Sears, in the mail-order retail business. Kind of like Amazon without the Internet.) May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned it into a song a decade later. Gene Autry recorded it for Christmas in 1949, and it immediately hit No. 1 on the pop music charts. It was still there at the end of the first week of January, making it the first No. 1 hit of the 1950s.
Its sales since then, including countless covers, have surpassed 150 million. Only White Christmas, among holiday songs, has sold more.

This light-hearted ditty (critics hated that about it) appeared on the Beatles' 1968 White Album. It was released as a single everywhere but the U.S. and the UK, and it topped the charts in several countries. When it was issued as a single in the U.S. in 1976, after the Beatles had broken up, it crawled about halfway up the Billboard Hot 100.
Although it's credited to the team of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, McCartney was its composer. Lennon hated it.

Martha My Dear is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 eponymous double album The Beatles (also known as the White Album). Credited to Lennon–McCartney, the song was written solely by Paul McCartney about his Old English Sheepdog, Martha. It has been covered by several artists, including Slade, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Phish, World Party, and Les Boréades de Montréal.
The song incorporates elements from pop rock music; it also features a music hall-inspired piano line that recurs throughout the piece, as well as a brass section.
The song modulates through several keys The song is notated mainly in the key of Eâ™­ major, showing up embellished chords with jazzy sprinkled dissonances.

The verse is a syncopated replicate of the first melodic section adding two extra beats, a technique similar to that used later by McCartney in Two of Us. Though the bridge is in the key of F major, the manner in which it abruptly sets in and exits makes it sound more out-of-the-way than it really is.

Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne wrote this for Frank Sinatra in 1954. It first appeared on the single B side of Sinatra's recording of White Christmas. It has since been beaten senseless by just about every conceivable recording artist, from Doris Day to John Travolta. (Really!) In rendering it for brass quintet, I've attempted to cause no further damage.

These two iconic songs were brilliantly brought together by Pomplamoose. The simple format lends itself to a treatment with just five instruments. Although not technically difficult, all players will have to work hard to get the phrasing of this piece just right. The 1st trumpet part includes one high D (with optional Bb) and there's one high A in the horn part. The solo guitar section of the original has been extended here to provide space for all five players.
