Forever And A Day is an original piece for brass quintet composed by Steve Dekker. This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.

The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.

Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes. Optional auxiliary percussion parts are included for shaker and tambourine if desired. Run time is 5:54. Enjoy!

Swing Along! by Will Marion Cook, prominent African-American in Music Theater, composer, conductor, and violinist, combines Cakewalk style with classical music techniques to create an entertaining and memorable work from the early 20th century now arranged for a brass quintet of two trumpets or cornets in B-flat, horn in F (alternate flugelhorn part provided), trombone and tuba. The recording is of the complete edition. 

Cook was a key figure in American music from the 1890s to the 1920s. His Swing Along! was written for a theater production in 1903 combining Black folk music with classical music techniques and became a popular standard with choruses and glee clubs. A violin virtuoso, he studied at Oberlin College, Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's National Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. He devoted his career to Black musical comedies and was instrumental in showcasing his Southern Syncopated Orchestrat throughout the Unites States and Europe, featuring New Orleans clarinetist Sidney Bechet. Mentored by Frederick Douglas, Will Marion Cook went on to mentor Duke Ellington, paving the path for orchestral concert jazz.

This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Scored for two trumpets in B-flat (with alternate C trumpet parts), horn (with flugelhorn substitute), trombone (with treble clef euphonium substitute) and tuba, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. The recoding is of the entire edition.

This set of three ragtime dances, Ragtime Gems for Brass Quintet was composed by African-American women in the early 20th century. All three were pianists, involved as performers and composers.

Ethel May Earnist, (1888-1957), composer of Chicken Chowder grew up in Omaha, NE and worked there in a music store. She moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she was employed as a musician by J.W. Jenkins' Sons Music Co.

Irene Giblin (1888-1974), composer of Peanuts was born in St Louis. She worked at St. Louis music stores, playing the piano for several hours a day to convince the customers to buy the latest scores.

Imogene Giles (1877-1964), composer of Red Peppers was a music teacher, a pianist for silent films and composer. She worked in the Giles music store in Quincy, Illinois for her brothers, who published her compositions.

The music, impeccably arranged by Elliot Chasanov is appropriate for advanced performers and is score for Piccolo Trumpet, Trumpet in B-flat, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.

The works may be performed as a suite or individually.

Early 20th century Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's Listen to the Lambs choral anthem combines his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for brass quintet. Johnson’s Broadway 1923 show “Runnin’ Wild†to become the wildly popular and unofficial anthem of the Roaring 20’s.  An important jazz pianist and composer, Johnson was a major influence on Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, and Fats Waller.  Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with a substitute flugelhorn part, trombone or euphonium and tuba, the arrangement uses the original 1923 piano edition and retains the style of the day. My Ragtime Baby was the 1898 mega hit featured in the Sousa Band European 1900 tour that introduced European audiences to American Ragtime. Fred Stone was a prominent African-American composer and conductor in the early Ragtime movement. The rag is arranged for two B-flat trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba.
