This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes.
