Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .   Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.      Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).       Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio Machín on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.       English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.      Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.     This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)       Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1102874 By Kent Stewart Burchill. By Traditional. Arranged by Kent S. Burchill. Christmas,Historic,Holiday,Praise & Worship,Traditional. 15 pages. WINDCREST #706204. Published by WINDCREST (A0.1102874). This arrangement for the brass quintet is a level level of 3.5 to 4 and has been created to share two of the most beautiful melodies of the Christmas Season, two different melodies sharing the same words and sentiment. This arrangement offers more modern harmonies and a diversion from the ordinary. It requires the French Horn player on a couple occasions to ascend to A and Bb above the staff. The tuba player must ascend to 4 space G several times and to fifth line A. Performance duration is about 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1462691 By Louis Armstrong & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by Will Corbin. Latin. 20 pages. Will Corbin #1041438. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462691). The Peanut Vendor (El Manisero) was written by Cuban composer Moises Simons in the late 1920s. The song sold a more than a million copies of sheet music and 78rpm records, and sparked rumbamania in the U.S. The National Recording Preservation Board recognizes it as the first American recording of an authentic Latin dance style. It has been covered in recordings something like 160 times, by Stan Kenton, Django Reinhart, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and many others. This fairly simple arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. The tuba lays down a beat while the higher voices swap pieces of the melody. It ain't fancy, but it plays well.If you want different instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.945050 Composed by Albert E. Weir. Arranged by Kent S. Burchill. Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Score and parts. 20 pages. WINDCREST #5356017. Published by WINDCREST (A0.945050). THEME, FUGUETTE and VARIATIONS on Lightly Row.  Rarely has a song for children been so widely utilized and for such a long period of time.  Written in the early 20th century, its wide-spread and successful use as a song for children can possibly be attributed to the construction of the melody itself.  The melody starts with two descending intervals, each a minor third. These same qualities also made Lightly Row an excellent choice as a song for use with beginning instrumentalists. One might find it difficult NOT to find this song included in most published beginning-level instrument method books since the mid-20th century.  This arrangement for brass quintet permits the performers to greatly expand upon the intervals and scale passage of the original song while exploring one of the more common composition forms, theme and variation with an excursion to a shortened version of another musical form, the fugue.  An attempt has been made to provide interesting and challenging material for all members of the quintet.  This selection could be performed at any point in a recital. It could be one of several featured selections performed in a concert with a programmatic theme of early 20th Century folk songs; or a portion of a concert where a theme and variation selection is desired. It might also serve as an encore to any recital or concert!

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.945051 Composed by Anonymous. Arranged by Kent S. Burchill. Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 28 pages. WINDCREST #5361571. Published by WINDCREST (A0.945051). This is one of the most well-known folk songs from the 19th Century. The performance duration of this selection is about five minutes at the suggested tempo. This selection will find welcome performance opportunities whenever a lighter-themed selection of Americana music is desired. While light-themed in nature, this arrangement places musical challenges upon the performers, all of whom should be medium advanced in their performance skills. This arrangement is written alla breve and begins in the key of F Major (concert), but modulates to G Major (concert) and eventually concludes in Ab Major (concert). The Trumpet I part ascends scale-wise to written Eb above high C at the end of a run at one point. The French Horn has a couple of instances of a written high G, A, and Bb above the staff. Otherwise, ranges are reasonable. The arrangement has multiple musical references to the American West. To this arranger the melody suggested a reference to fiddle tunes and barn dances, an important social and cultural past-time of the era. It seemed like a logical direction to steer this arrangement.
