Lexicon II is the second composition in a series that defines words through music. The first movement, Ballyhoo, means clamor or outcry. This is achieved musically through a fast tempo, wide intervals, asymetric meter, imitative sixteenth note patterns, and mild dissonance. The second movement, Clandestine, uses pyramids to disguise the melodic line and asymetrical meter to disguise the beat in order to represent the definition of characterized by, done in, or executed with secrecy or concealment, especially for purposes of subversion or deception. The brass instruments are muted throughout this movement. In order to represent Eerie, the word for the third movement, a slow tempo and sparse instrumentation are used along with dissonance, extreme dynamics, trills and glissandi. Eerie means uncanny, so as to inspire superstitious fear. The fourth movement, Amok, is filled with dissonance, counterpoint, and chromaticism in order to represent its definition; to behave uncontrollably and disruptively. Sections of order seem to break down into sections of chaos and the movement ends on an unsettled chord.

The “Old Hundredth� psalm/hymn tune earned its name from its association with a metrical setting of Psalm 100 by William Kethe (d. 1594), published in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter (1591). Kethe’s first stanza, based on Psalm 100, verses 1-2, reads: All people that on earth do dwell,Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell;Come ye before Him and rejoice.Thus, the “Old Hundredth� is popularly titled, “All People That on Earth Do Dwell.� It is also well-known as the tune for the doxology, “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.� The tune is attributed to the French music theorist and composer Louis Bourgeois (c. 1510-1559), who contributed a number of tunes to the Genevan Psalter of 1551.This arrangement is fitting as a short introit to a service of worship.©2013 Todd Marchand / www.conspiritomusic.com

Here is a compelling setting of Martin Luther’s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (EIN FESTE BURG) by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1750). Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Brass Quartet, Brass Quintet, or Brass Choir with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. It also provides opportunities to discuss the time of the Reformation. For worship the arrangement can be played alone or it can be used to accompany congregational singing. Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP).
