Sousa composed The Fairest of the Fair intending his Band to perform it at the annual Boston Food Fair in the fall of 1908. It is the only work of any kind that he composed that year and one of only a handful of compositions that he wrote between 1906 and 1910. He apparently completed it in New York during the summer, as the final page of the original score was signed John Philip Sousa, Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.The march almost missed its premier at the Boston Food Fair. Because of an oversight the music, which Sousa had written and scored out, did not have individual parts written out for the performers. This was discovered the day before the performance. The new composition had received much advanced publicity and it would have been an embarrassment to Sousa not to have it performed. The band’s copyist, Louis Morris, rose to the occasion and on the train to Boston stayed up and copied out the parts so the band could premier the work as advertised on September 28, 1908. In the morning when Sousa found out Morris was working all night he instructed him to finish the work and get some rest. The recording is of the complete edition. Cook was a key figure in American music from the 1890s to the 1920s. His Swing Along! was written for a theater production in 1903 combining Black folk music with classical music techniques and became a popular standard with choruses and glee clubs. A violin virtuoso, he studied at Oberlin College, Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's National Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. He devoted his career to Black musical comedies and was instrumental in showcasing his Southern Syncopated Orchestrat throughout the Unites States and Europe, featuring New Orleans clarinetist Sidney Bechet. Vers l’avenir (French for Toward the Future) was a commission from Saint Anselm College (Manchester, New Hampshire) for the inauguration of its tenth president. The title, which echoed the college’s recently-announced Faith in the Future campaign, announces the mood of the piece: energetic, festive, with open and bold harmonies, but also incorporating more lyrical, reflective sections. I rarely set out to emulate a particular composer, but familiar voices or sounds do often emerge. To me, this piece has echoes of Giovanni Gabrieli, Leoš Jana�ček, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky , Eric Ewazen, and Sonny Rollins, among others.

Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice.Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).
