Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. This haunting piece of music from Beethoven's 7th Symphony has been abridged and carefully arranged for Brass Quintet. It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. Parts are also included for non standard Brass Band instruments such as Tenor Horn in Eb, Euph/Trom in treble clef, plus Eb and Bb Bass also in treble clef. All parts are written with consideration of typical range and technique. Some ensembles might prefer to opt for Trumpet 1 in Eb rather than 2 trumpets in Bb. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (G & D) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 45 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-24 print A4 double sided), all parts p25-45 (with the exception of Timpani p45) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). The opening fragmented “cencerro” and reggaeton rhythmic motive proclaimed is significant in that it introduces the works essence. “Sandungueo” is a style of dance and party music associated with reggaeton. This “cencerro” and “guaguanco” tumbao motives return throughout the piece in various guises and changes of tonality. The piece emulates a jazz ensemble where there are sections in which the instruments are called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo or vamp. Latin and Hip-Hop rhythmic motives are prominent and integral to the work. This piece is a reworking of the second movement of my “Quinteto de Metales”.
