Chaconne is the final movement of Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, for solo violin. While many agree that Chaconne is a masterpiece for violin, it can certainly be argued that it is also among the greatest pieces of music ever written. Since Bach's time, several transcriptions of the piece have been made for other instruments, including inspired versions by Ferruccio Busoni (piano) and William Thomas Best (organ). This new arrangement, for brass quintet and organ, draws inspiration from both the Busoni and Best transcriptions. First published in 1850, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing was one of four of Campbell's hymn texts to be included in Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861), the first standardized and popular hymnal of the Anglican Church.The tune accompanying the text, known as SALZBURG, is attributed to the German composer Jakob Hintze (1622-1702). Its harmonization has long been attributed to J.S. Bach and numbered among his works as BWV 262. There is an optional two bar link before the verse begins at bar 3. The fifteen page download includes a one page soprano descant score, five individual brass parts and a two page organ score. The brass quintet parts are more advanced in difficulty level, the soprano descant and organ parts are intermediate in difficulty level. The descant is new and fresh, and the harmonies used to support it are closely related to the familiar harmonization by Mendelssohn. The trumpet parts in particular are fanfare-like while the lower three instruments support the hymn tune and harmony. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Trumpets and 2 Trombones, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man.  Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments.  Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli.  These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer.  Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. Published by Stephanie Daige (A0.796864). This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved keyboard works. Re-imagined for brass quintet, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue.  The five instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments.  The timbres of the different instruments add a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these brass instruments, which obviously wasn’t an issue in the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students,or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert,perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals.  I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it!
