Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. Will Corbin #1041432. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462672). Judy Garland sang this (it would become her signature tune) in 1939's The Wizard Of Oz. It would win that year's Oscar for best original song. Since then, it has been sung by just about everyone on the planet. One notably different version, from which I've borrowed shamelessly for this arrangement, is the one from the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. This one is scored for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba. This song is from the 1927 Broadway musical Showboat, music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (before his more celebrated partnership with Richard Rodgers). It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences.
