This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. The full name is Hard-Hearted Hannah (The Vamp Of Savannah). If you've never heard the lyrics, look 'em up. They're a hoot.
The song was written in 1924 and performed by a number of contemporary singers and bands. Its a favorite of barbershop quartets. Sammy Nestico did a terrific arrangement for big band.
It was even sung by an American Idol contestant. She lost. Badly.
This arrangement is adapted from an old stock Dixieland chart for mixed ensemble.

Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velazquez wrote Besame Mucho, words and music, in 1941. When she died in 2005, The New York Times said this of the song in her obituary: 'Bésame Mucho' is not so much an enduring standard as a global phenomenon. Translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists, the song has been an emblem of Latin identity, an anthem of lovers separated by World War II and perennial grist for lounge singers everywhere. Virtually every professional recording musician has covered it, from the Beatles to Placido Domingo. This arrangement borrows its 6/4 time signature (and not much more) from the 2001 recording by Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur. It's a little more accessible than Ferguson's screaming big band chart.

Cuban-born (he fled to the U.S. when Castro took over) Ernesto Lecuona wrote the Suite Andalucia in 1933; Malaguena, the best known and most performed part of it, is the sixth movement. It has been covered by everyone from orchestras to big bands to drum-and-bugle corps to (!) Connie Francis.
This arrangement is inspired by and adapted in part from Bill Holman's spectacular 1961 arrangement for the Stan Kenton big band. The song was on Kenton's Adventures In Jazz album, which won a Grammy in 1962.
I've made it considerably less adventuresome -- like taming the trumpet ranges -- so it's more accessible to mere mortals.

This song was written by a Dutch singer, Johannes (Hans) Bouwens, who performed under a country-music stage name, George Baker. It's kind of a sappy peace-and-freedom anthem that topped Billboard's easy listening chart for 1976. A clue to the nature of the song: Slim Whitman covered it. And a Brit band gave it a kind of Weird Al treatment, recasting it as I Am A Cider Drinker. Nevertheless, it makes a pretty good brass quintet tune (in parrt because you don't have to hear the lyrics).

La Paloma is said to be the most frequently played song in the world. And it's about as world as it can be. Composer Sebastian Yradier was a Basque (Spain). It was first performed in Cuba, It's a Mexican love and protest song, a German sailors' lament and a Romanian funeral dirge.

Here's a latter-day Dixieland favorite which first appeared in the 1947 film New Orleans. It was performed in that setting by Louis Armstrong and the great Billie Holiday. This arrangement is adapted for brass quintet from an old stock chart of mixed instrumentation.

A song doesn't get more traveled than this one. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman.
The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich.
This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.
