Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.927013 Composed by Charles Johnson. Arranged by Dr. Jim Fox, ASCAP. 20th Century,Traditional. Score and parts. 25 pages. All Brass Radio Publishing #3050619. Published by All Brass Radio Publishing (A0.927013). In the early 20th century, the rag was king.  Charles Johnson wrote this wonder of a Two-Step Rag and called it Dill Pickles.  Like almost rags, it is lively and fun.  People would enjoy listening to rag music while drinking Kellogs Cheerios Beer! This arrangement uses two trumpets, a french horn, a trombone (which several glissandos) and a tuba that occasionally has the melody.  The melody is passed from part to part, it has a false ending and a false key change.  It sounds like it is ending but, no, it is going on.  The false key change has bars that move to different keys but when done ends up in the same key. This is kind of handy as once each part has the fingerings for their part down, they can just keep on going.  It keeps the audience alive and is a fun addition for any quintet.

Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1202140 Composed by Johanna Hall and John Hall. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary,Disco,Hip-Hop,Pop,R & B,Rock. Score and parts. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #800795. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1202140). John Hall and his then-wife Johanna had written several hit songs for John's group, Orleans.  Johanna wanted to create a song in the 1950s doo-wop style she so admired.  They did, and their composition described a certain Miss Grace who enchanted the lyricist with her “satin and perfume and lace.† The problem was: that song really did not fit in with Orleans' pop rock repertoire and image.  Meanwhile, The Tymes, a Philadelphia group, was looking for a number that might revive its popularity.  So when the Miss Grace song was suggested they decided to take it on.  This was the mid-1970s, just when the honorific Ms. was growing in use.  So The Tymes changed the song's title to “Ms. Grace.† Released as a single, the song did very well in the UK, topping the chart at number one in January 1975.    Written in 4/4 time, this brass quintet version flows along at about 104 BPM.  Beginning notation instructs that eighth-note pairs are to be played so that the first note is about twice as long as the second; in other words, swing style.  It retains the original D major key, but gives most of the melody to Horn and Trombone an octave lower so that it stays within normal playing range of the group.  The nature of the song is such that there are a number of phrases that begin with off-beat pickup notes.  Trumpets provide accents and flourishes and occasionally take over the melody for a few measures.  Tuba really does the most work, playing through almost the entire piece.    Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 3 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1465633 By Dean Martin. By Luis Demetrio Traconis Molina, Norman Gimbel, and Pablo Beltran Ruiz. Arranged by Will Corbin. Latin,Pop. 19 pages. Will Corbin #1044245. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1465633). Luis Demetrio and Pablo Beltran Ruiz wrote this song in 1953 as Quien Sera? (which means Who will it be?)(indicating the song was probably about something other than dancing when it began). Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics for it a year later (he also anglicized The Girl From Ipanema), and Dean Martin promptly recorded it on an album of the same name. It's more familiar today in its Michael Buble incarnation (from which this arrangement picks up bits and pieces). Ladies of a certain age will love it.If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1495797 By JACOB L WALKER. By Traditional. Arranged by JACOB L WALKER. Chamber,Christian,Christmas,Jazz,Traditional. 17 pages. 8 Steps Music LLC #1072326. Published by 8 Steps Music LLC (A0.1495797). Imagine a brass quintet performing Angels We Have Heard on High with a lively jazz twist. The arrangement starts with a traditional introduction, the warm, rich tones of the brass instruments setting a festive mood. As the piece progresses, the tempo picks up, and the arrangement shifts into a grooving 7/8 rhythm, with syncopated beats and playful melodic lines. As the piece reaches its climax, the entire quintet comes together for a powerful, harmonized finale, bringing the carol back to its roots but with a fresh twist that leaves the audience delighted.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1461116 Composed by Burton Lane and Ralph Freed. Arranged by Will Corbin. Broadway,Historic,Musical/Show,Pop. 18 pages. Will Corbin #1040026. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461116). Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney sang this as a conversation duet in the 1941 film Babes On Broadway, one of their many screen collaborations. And it's the only song from the film you've ever heard of since. It pops up here and there in movies, and was most famously covered by Frank Sinatra. The lyrics were a product of their times. The original featured the line, Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill. Sinatra substituted James Durante's looks. Neither works today. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, picks up the original's conversation, passing it among the four higher horns. If you'd like alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church.  Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody.  Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom.  She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart.  Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.”  Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular.  When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind.       J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded.  In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original.  You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences.     This composition is 201 measures in length.  It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141).  Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C.  There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing.     The introduction is 21 measures in length.  It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto.  In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression.       At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles.       The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme.     Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds.  Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument.     The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.
