Handel Parker (29.1.1854 - 30.1.1928) was the son of Abraham and Martha Parker. They loved music and therefore named most of their children after famous composers. They lived in the hamlet of Marsh and Handel was playing the flute at the age of seven in the Drum & Fife Band in Oxenhope (near Keighley). He left school at age 13 to work in a textile mill.

At age 14, he commenced being organist of the Oxenhope Baptist parish in 1868. Around age 20 he became a professional musician, teaching flute, violin and trombone.  He gave organ recitals and also conducted many choirs and brass bands (e.g the Haworth Band for 50 years). Parker was choirmaster and organist of the cathedral in Nassau, Bahamas.

Originally written for Pipe Organ this piece has become popular with British Style Brass Bands around the world. Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Brass Quartet, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank.
