A Moorside Suite for Brass Quintet, by Gustav Holst was composed in 1927 as a work for brass band, commissioned by the BBC for the National Brass Band Festival Competitions at the Crystal Palace. The suite comprises three movements - Scherzo, Nocturne and March. (Wikipedia)

Spring from the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi is a masterpiece of Baroque music that captures the essence of the changing season. The composition features three movements, each invoking the sights and sounds of springtime. The first movement is a joyful celebration of the arrival of spring, with its lively melodies and energetic rhythms. The second movement is a pastoral scene, featuring delicate solos, representing the peacefulness of the countryside in spring and even a barking dog. Finally, the third movement depicts a violent thunderstorm, before giving way to an optimistic finale that reflects the renewal and rebirth of nature in spring.

This marvelous work of about 9-minutes in length by Mark LaFratta has been arranged and transposed from the original. It is scored for standard Brass Quintet with Trumpets in B-flat and is appropriate for advanced performers.

The Severn Suite (Op.87) was composed by Elgar when he was 73 as a test piece for the 1930 British National Brass Band Championships. Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgar’s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike.

The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) – Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) – Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) – Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento – Pomposo (2:00). The River Severn runs through the center of Worcester, England where Elgar spent his childhood and again lived in later life.

This work beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for standard brass quintet (2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone in bass clef and Tuba) is appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed by all conical instruments as well (Cornets, Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba).

The Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1 beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for Brass Quintet was compiled by Respighi as a Piano transcription in 1917 and is based on a Renaissance collection of works for Lute by Molinaro, Galilei (father of the famous Galileo), and two other anonymous composers from that era. The four movements are titled: 1. Simone Molinaro, 1599 2. Vincenzo Galilei, 1550's 3. Villanella (anonymous late 16th century) 4. Passo mezzo e mascherada (anonymous, late 16th century) This 16-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers and a joy to perform.

Possibly dating from the Middle Ages, this English folk tune was first published with secular lyrics in English County Songs, an anthology compiled in 1893. It was first introduced as a hymn tune in The English Hymnal of 1906 set to the words of Horatius Bonar’s “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.� It is also commonly sung to Louis Benson’s Christmas carol O Sing a Song of Bethlehem and Fred Pratt Green's Passion hymn To Mock Your Reign, O Dearest Lord. The tune is named for the English town of Kingsfold. Grade 3+ - Duration 2:40.

Parlami d'amore Mariù è un brano musicale italiano del 1932, scritto da Ennio Neri (testo) e Cesare Andrea Bixio (musica) per la voce di Vittorio De Sica (Columbia, WB 5066), che l'avrebbe interpretato nel film Gli uomini, che mascalzoni.... La canzone è dedicata alla moglie di Bixio, Mary, detta Mariù.
Stefano Pittaluga, che era il patron della casa cinematografica Cines, fu sostituito da Emilio Cecchi e (non senza qualche nervosismo) impose che il film avesse per colonna sonora principale la canzone Taxi (titolo provvisorio anche della pellicola); permise tuttavia che fosse inserita anche Parlami d'amore Mariù, che risultò poi di tutt'altra memorabilità.
Durante le riprese, il regista Mario Camerini e Bixio forzarono l'utilizzo del brano: nella scena della trattoria, in cui De Sica balla con la ragazza, doveva sentirsi in sottofondo un organino suonare. Nottetempo e contro l'avviso della produzione, compositore e regista si fecero appositamente realizzare un rullo per l'organino con la musica della canzone; il rullo fu pronto alle sette del mattino e, poco dopo, Camerini sostituì il rullo dell'organino e iniziarono le riprese con quel sottofondo.
Pubblicato in origine dalle edizioni musicali di proprietà di Pittaluga, venne in seguito acquisita dal Gruppo Editoriale Bixio.
