Euphonium,Flugelhorn,Trombone,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158153 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Christian,Classical,Religious. 25 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758458. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158153). Originally set for SATB choir with brass accompaniment, the creative setting that was performed in 2000 was for four flugelhorns and euphonium without choir. Although it was effective, and the premiere was a success, Dr. Thrower revised the work for the established instrumentation of the brass quintet. Even in this publication, though, he strayed from this belief by calling for euphonium in place of the trombone, if available. If not, trombone is perfectly acceptable. The trumpeters should perform their parts on flugelhorns if possible.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489511). In 2022 the United States Air Force celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance since its creation in 1947.  The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year.  This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations.  “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another.  The lyrics are here:In my youth, I knew a manWho loved to talk about his history;Unfolded his mystery! He made me laugh about some things,And we cried about some others,And we prayed as we talked about his fallen brothers. As I grew, I though a lotAbout that man who told me stories—His woes and his glories.Something firm about his voiceInspired my skill to make a choice,To recall our defenders’ valiant sacrifice. As I wanted to be like this man,As I pondered and dreamedOf becoming what I can,I hoped to see the day, without delay,To defend, like my friend! When I took the oath,I remembered that man!How proud he would beOf his brand new Airman!I answered the call.I’ll give it my all!I will not falter!  I will not fail!I’m a guardian of the tradition of honor!Fly, fight, and win! When I hold my little boy,And think of freedoms he’ll enjoy,I ponder his destiny.Yes, it’s hard when I deploy! But distance cannot destroyWhat I love; what I fight so very hard to save!Generations come and go.I wish they all could knowHow it feels to serve America. The piece was difficult for the singers, but they practiced hard, and the USAF Heartland of America Band premiered it during an Independence Day concert tour in June and July 2022, including the grand patriotic concert at Mount Rushmore.A casual comment from one of the singers lingered: “You write for singers like they’re horns!”  It is true that most of my compositional experience is with brass instruments.  This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition.  It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global.  Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158388 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Comedy. 22 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758669. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158388). My wife’s from-scratch cinnamon rolls are famous throughout our community—especially among our children’s circle of friends. While enjoying a socially-distanced church service at home on Easter Sunday, there was a batch of those butterfly-inducing cinnamon rolls baking in the new oven. They filled the home with an exquisite aromatic delight. Then the magic motif chimed: “The food is done!” I happened to have my composition notebook with me, and the little four-note tune inspired this composition. It just naturally took me in some happy musical directions, and within a minute or two, the melodic content, replete with fun-filled, muted second-trumpet echoes, was scrawled down. The next day, the music was entered into the computer. It is interesting that I gave the horn the cliché off-beats that all hornists know and love so well. Funny, I usually pride myself on writing for horn as an equal musical instrument; however, this fun, happy melody just demanded an “um-pah” accompaniment. Hopefully there is enough variety to keep the part fun to play. It helps that the piece is only two minutes and something long. The transition into the B section almost wrote itself, modulating to the relative minor. There I paused briefly, wondering how to treat a minor section in such an exuberant piece. Oh, but inspiration continued to flow, and I resumed writing in earnest with a mischievous smile! This section beautifully portrays a naughty, sneaky kid tiptoeing into the kitchen for another cinnamon roll—forbidden until after dinner! The listener can hear the kid’s nervous fluttering heart, and moments of pulling his hand back in startled impishness, and even shuddering as he looks fearfully over his shoulder. At the end of the B section, he gets caught! Witnessing that low-hanging head and puppy dog eyes, mommy finds that she can’t scold the lad too severely. “After dinner, little one…” she reprimands with an understanding grin. The jubilant melody returns to round out the work’s ternary ABA form, though this time with a very sticky Ives-esque climax, reminiscent of a gooey cinnamon roll mess. Too enjoyable to be bothered by prospects of cleaning up, the music shrugs it off with flippant ragtime syncopations, and ends with the “hic-burp” of a very satisfied tummy.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1303802 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. 21st Century,Chamber,Children,Historic,Multicultural,World. 77 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #893335. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1303802).      A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:          Oh!  I’m a young musician,          From distant lands I come.          Singing and playing,          Ever I’m straying.     Also known as “I Am a Fine Musician,” “I Am a Gay Musician” and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions.  The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s.  As published in an 1889 collection of children’s songs, it bears the title, “Ich bin ein Musikant.”  That translates as “I am a musician.”  In the lyrics the musician claims to be “from Schwabenland” (Swabia) and to play geige (violin: “Dide schum schum schum”), flöte (flute: “Päde wäpp päpp päpp”) and basse (bass: “Dide schum schum schump, päde wäpp päpp päpp).  Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of.      Anyway, that’s the tune on which “The Brass Player” was built.  But here, the musician is concerned only with brass.  Which brass?  Well, possibly trumpet.  Or maybe horn in F.  Or trombone.  Or tuba.  Or perhaps all four; certainly, all are featured in this piece.     “The Brass Player” comprises four sections.  The first is in the key of C major and is played at a moderate 2/4 tempo.  After a brief Trumpet/Tuba ostinato, Trombone introduces the main theme.  Other instruments join in and play around with a variation or two.      The second section is a sweet, nostalgic rendition in 4/4 carried mainly by Horn in F, with help from Trumpets and Trombone.      In section three, the mood changes radically.  Time signature goes to 3/4; tempo speeds up to vivace and the key changes to B Minor.  All five instruments participate, and some odd things take place rhythmically at I through K (measures 200 through 262), but Tuba seems to carry the melody most of the time.     Section four, in G Major, clips along at a fast 4/4 time.  It returns to the main theme and (as in “Ich bin ein Musikant” and its multitudinous derivations) presents in call-and-response form.  The first few measures are straight, but discord quickly creeps in.  The melody begins to include smears, flutter tonguing and off-beat rhythmic figures.  There is even a brief section in G Minor.  Gradually, order and theme are restored and the piece ends in a glorious, upbeat statement.     This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 398 measures, a little over nine minutes in length.  There are four changes of key and four changes of time signature.  Trumpet 1’s highest note is A above its staff; Trombone’s is F above the staff.  Trumpet 2 has a few G-below-its-staff notes.     The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.840947 Composed by Hans Leo Hassler. Arranged by Richard Decker. Chamber,Early Music,Multicultural,Renaissance,World. 62 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #447653. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.840947). Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man.  Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments.  Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli.  These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer.  Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. The arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with optional C trumpet parts, horn in F, trombone and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.See more than 70 mixed brass ensemble publications with Charles Decker Music Press at Sheet Music Plus for inexperienced to advanced musicians with music ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary new works for trios, quartets, quintets, brass choir and brass band. Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158199 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,March,Patriotic. 32 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758476. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158199). There is nothing more quintessentially military than the grand sound of marches at special military events. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55th”—under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song” most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio” section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweigh”, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March King”, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata form”, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march” alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55th”, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Forever”) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th” an appropriate and even artistic concert march.
