Here are two very interesting, although brief, marches arranged for brass quintet. It will be interesting for students to see how they differ as they are from two different historical musical periods; Baroque and Romantic. A Trombone-sub-for-Horn in F part is included, and much of the first trumpet part is share with the second trumpet allowing relief for younger groups.

The Banks O' Doon (Modern Scots: The Banks o Doon) is a Scots song written by Robert Burns in 1791, sometimes known as Ye Banks and Braes (after the opening line of the third version). Burns set the lyrics to an air called The Caledonian Hunt's Delight. Its melodic schema was also used for Phule Phule Dhole Dhole, a song by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

The song was inspired by the story of Margaret (Peggy) Kennedy (1766—95), who was seduced and then abandoned by Andrew McDouall, the son of a wealthy family and sometime Member of Parliament for Wigtonshire. Kennedy sued for a declarator of marriage, but died prior to adjudication of the case. Although the Consistorial court found the marriage claim valid, the Court of Session decided the marriage claim failed, but found McDouall to be the father of Kennedy's daughter and ordered that he pay £3,000 to Kennedy's estate and provide for the child.

(Burns wrote a second poem about Peggy, who he had met when she was 18 - Young Peggy Blooms.).

Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist born on June 15, 1843, in Bergen, Norway. He came from a musical family and showed great talent for music at a young age. Grieg composed a variety of works, including orchestral music, chamber music, songs, and piano pieces. He is best known for his composition “Peer Gynt,†which includes the popular suite “In the Hall of the Mountain King.†Other famous works by Grieg include the Piano Concerto in A Minor and the Holberg Suite.

Throughout his career, Grieg was devoted to promoting Norwegian music and culture. He was a central figure in the Norwegian music scene and worked to establish a national identity through his music.

Grieg’s influence on Norwegian music was significant, and he is considered one of the leading figures in the Norwegian Romantic movement. His music was also highly regarded by his contemporaries, including Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy.

Composed by Robert Schumann (1810-1856). Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. Contest,Festival,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 19 pages. EMK Music #719519. Published by EMK Music (A0.1118010).

Scored for Two Trumpets (Bb Cornets/Flugel Horn), F Horn, Trombone/Euphonium and Tuba. There are alternative parts for Eb Horn and Bb Horn (F Horn), Bb Trombone/Euphonium in Treble and Bass Clef (Trombone), Eb and Bb Bass in Treble and Bass Clef (Tuba). Please Note: This title is published for Brass Quartet and Brass Quintet. The parts are not interchangeable and can be differentiated by looking at bottom left hand corner. The Merry Peasant was written by Schumann in 1848 when it was included in the first part of his ‘Album for the Young’ which was written for his three daughters. These comparatively easy pieces were intended to be played by children or by beginners. It is often now given the more contemporary title of The Happy Farmer which is used for this publication. The style and the major key evoke a sense of a rural worker returning from the fields at the end of the day in a good mood. The melody inspired the song Red Wing (1907) and it was used in the underscore of the film, The Wizard of Oz.
