Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks was commissioned by King George II for fireworks in Green Park, April 27 1749 in celebration of the end of the War of the Austrian Succession. The original instrumentation was for a large wind band of over 60 musicians. Since then it has been scored for many different ensembles. Steven Gamble has scored this wonderful Overture of about 9 minutes in length for advanced level brass quintet: 2 Trumpets in C (part for Piccolo Trumpet in A is included), Horn, Trombone, Tuba or Bass Trombone. The music is scored in the key of C, down a step from the original.

The lyrics come from Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory. However, it did not become popular at weddings until it was selected by Victoria, The Princess Royal for her marriage to Prince Frederick William of Prussia on 25 January 1858.
