This arrangement is part of the Chicago Gargoyle Brass and Organ Ensemble Signature Series.     This arrangement features the Horn which plays the part of the Alto solo throughout. The melody comes from Des Knaben Wunderhorn and it is one of Mahler's most beautiful songs. Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). I took some time to compose this musical elegy as a gift for Brett, Marina's widower and my horn-playing friend in the Omaha Symphony, in his time of mourning. It was delivered the day before Easter. The two-minute composition is rich with harmonies and independently moving lines that complement the melody, first presented in the horn part. As Marina was also a fine horn player, the symbolic gesture of extensive melodic content in the horn fits the passion expressed in the overall short work. One fervent cry soars strongly heavenward in the horn before the final quiet motif ends the musical condolence. This piece is offered at the lowest price allowed.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1237416). “Fast and Playful,� a jolly mix of fanfares and quieter, more lighthearted sections, packs impish drollery and escapades into one fun-filled piece.  Based on “Allegro giocoso,� the delightful third movement of Brahms Symphony No. 4, this arrangement was especially created for brass quintet.  It preserves the fun and whimsicality of the original but translates that into a form accessible for brass instruments.  Changes involve octaves and rhythmic figures, but melodic themes, sections, period order and key signature remain the same.      Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 6 minutes, 42 seconds. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811024). Nick Francis is a very talented Canadian composer. His Quintet's 3 movements are fused into a single macro-movement of about 17 minutes in length. The work requires advanced performers with the Trumpet parts being in C. The work opens with a gentle hymn.  The music gradually works itself up into a heroic tune.<P> The second movement begins in the barren wasteland left by the disintegration of the first. After a time, paraphrased fragments of the Anglican seafaring hymn Eternal Father begin emerging. Gradually the earlier wasteland feel begins to bloom, and the movement closes quietly in E major.  The Finale is in two sections. The 2nd section brings the music back to E-flat major, with all of its heroic properties, and heads the quintet towards a thunderous climax followed by a mad gallop to the finish. This music is dedicated with deep gratitude to Nate and to all the members of the Sapphire Brass, without whose confidence in new music it might never have been written.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1147711). “The Huron Carol� is the popular name for a Christmas song written in the language of the Wendat, an indigenous people of Canada — their name meaning “people of the island� or “dwellers on a peninsula� — nicknamed “Huron� (“boar's head�) by French explorers and traders due to the bristly hairstyle of Wendat men.The song began as a tool for teaching and converting the Wendat to Christianity, and it was likely written in the early 1640s by the French Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brébeuf. In Wendat, the song is titled “Jesous Ahatonnia,� which means “Jesus is Born.� The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, “Une Jeune Pucelle� (“A Young Maid�). Jean de Brébeuf’s lyrics present the Nativity story using images and ideas that would have been familiar to the Wendat. Angels are “spirits� and “sky people�; the Magi (wise men) are “elders,� and as an act of reverence they oil Jesus’ scalp, a practice Wendat people would have recognized. Today, “The Huron Carol's� most well-known lyrics, beginning “'Twas in the moon of winter-time,� were written by Canadian poet Jesse Middleton and published in 1927 in a small illustrated book titled “The First Canadian Christmas Carol.�Middleton’s text is not a translation, but a complete rewriting of “Jesous Ahatonnia� for English speakers, and bears almost no relation to the original Wendat text. Middleton relied on stereotypes, critics say, painting a picture of an indigenous Nativity in a “lodge of broken bark,� with “hunter braves� replacing shepherds, and “gifts of fur and beaver pelt� delivered by “chiefs from far.� Still, the carol has long been popular, perhaps in part due to its refrain, “Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born.
