Published by Bandroom.com Publications (A0.859755). _______________________Here's a nice Brass Quintet with flexible scoring (see Instrumentation, below) to add a little jazz styling to your performance. It opens with a quasi-waltz full of shifting time signatures, then moves into a straight-ahead swing section with a reappearance of the opening thematic material. Beware of the tricky finger-snapping in the B section for the Tuba player, who must play at the same time (fun!).Instrumentation: Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn, Trombone, Tuba (also includes parts for Trumpet 3 as substitute for Horn and TC Euphonium as substitute for Trombone)You can see more samples and read more detailed information about the piece at www.bandroom.com-------------------------------------COMPOSER: Now retired, Brian Harris holds the Ph.D. in Music Education from the Florida State University and was a band director for over 30 years at the public school and college levels. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.990610 Composed by C.S. Grafulla. Arranged by Emmett Anglin. Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Score and parts. 13 pages. OTBM #3248517. Published by OTBM (A0.990610). This is a nice little march (quickstep) C.S. Grafulla wrote possibly before the American Civil War. I know he is famous for his Washington Greys but the fact is that he wrote around 20 other marches (quicksteps) The original is a piano piece I discovered through the Library of Congress. The actual original sheet music may now reside in The Duke Collection which was on loan to the LOC at the time I did this arrangement. Like many Brass Quintets the melody is mostly in the trumpets. However, the lower brass do get a piece of the melody from time to time. Probably around two minutes. 102 measures. F and B-flat major. Probably a grade 3. Highest trumpet pitch is g on the top of the staff.

Brass quintet - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CMS164 Composed by Edward Taylor Paull. Arranged by Judith Katz. Score and Parts. 24 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CMS164. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMS164). 9 x 12 in inches. While doing some research on pre-20th Century American composers, I came across the name of Edward Taylor Paull. In all of my years as a flutist, conductor, and now writer, I never heard of Paull before, but I was curious enough to look for any sound files of his music, and came across both live piano performances and piano roll performances of the Ben HurChariot Race March on YouTube.Edward Taylor Paul, known in some circles as The Other March King was born on February 16th, 1858. In Gerrardstown, Virginia, now West Virginia. While not too much is known about his early years, we do know that his adult years were spent as itinerant musician, instrument sales person, selling pianos and organs, composer, as well as publisher. The Civil War era had Patrick Sarsfield Gillmore as the most famous bandleader and composer. As children of this era, John Philip Sousa and Edward Taylor Paull, were destined to follow in Gillmore's footsteps. While Sousa became successful through his work as both conductor and composer, even attaining the moniker of March King, the road to success and fame was more difficult for Paull. We do know, that by 1878, he was the manager of a music store that sold pianos and organs, eventually going bankrupt, and having to be bailed out by his own father. By 1894, he was the manager of the Richmond Music Publishing Company, and this was the same year that he was issued his first copyright on the Ben Hur Chariot Race March This was originally written for piano, particularly, the parlour piano. This was to become one of many marches and parlour piano compositions by 'E.T, Paull. He may not have been the most skilled musician of his era, but he was wise enough to realize how popular marches became in 1880's and '90's.Paull's compositions were also associated with beautiful color covers. He was fortunate to live in Richmond, Virginia, and the lithography company of A. Hoen & Company, provided him the highest quality and richly-colored art work for his compositions. This company was unique, in that they used a five- color process, which added depth to the color. Thepopularity of marches, plus the great covers, both contributed to the 60,000 copies that the Ben Hur Chariot Race March sold in its first printing. Not bad, for a first composition.Paull found inspiration for his march from the novel Ben Hur, written and published by General Lew Wallace in 1880. Paull dedicated his composition to Wallace, who sold many copies of his book. Eventually, there was a stage play and three film renditions; one in 1907, 1925, and 1959. Some time in the 1920's, the Sousa Band recorded the Ben Hur Chariot Race March, and of course, the MGM, 1925 film version, helped in a renewed popularity of Paull's composition.Edward Taylor Paull died in 1924, and his wife retained the copyright, until it went into public domain. What remains today are a few music examples in the Library of Congress collection, as well as some 78's and piano rolls. While I did my research on this piece, I tried to find any applicable Sousa manuscripts of a possible arrangement, but I could not findany. I usually write for woodwinds, but in this case, I thought that a brass quintet would sound far better. I also chose a moderate tempo, so as not to lose some of the nuances of the original composition.

Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1495797 By JACOB L WALKER. By Traditional. Arranged by JACOB L WALKER. Chamber,Christian,Christmas,Jazz,Traditional. 17 pages. 8 Steps Music LLC #1072326. Published by 8 Steps Music LLC (A0.1495797). Imagine a brass quintet performing Angels We Have Heard on High with a lively jazz twist. The arrangement starts with a traditional introduction, the warm, rich tones of the brass instruments setting a festive mood. As the piece progresses, the tempo picks up, and the arrangement shifts into a grooving 7/8 rhythm, with syncopated beats and playful melodic lines. As the piece reaches its climax, the entire quintet comes together for a powerful, harmonized finale, bringing the carol back to its roots but with a fresh twist that leaves the audience delighted.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1461634 By Various. By Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi. Arranged by Will Corbin. Jazz,Pop. 23 pages. Will Corbin #1040378. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461634). This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. This accessible arrangement, which features a Dixieland break, is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1373864 By Bobby Darin. By Paul Francis Webster and Sonny Burke. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Blues. 17 pages. Peet du Toit #958338. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1373864). Black Coffee is a song with music by Sonny Burke and words by Paul Francis Webster. The song was published in 1948.It's first two measures are nearly identical to Mary Lou Williams' 1938 piece What's Your Story Morning Glory, and both songs share melodic motifs drawn from blues (including a strong melodic emphasis on the flat third and flat seventh intervals, known as blue notes). Williams felt that Burke and Webster plagiarized her composition, and reportedly considered taking legal action over the matter. The two songs have significant melodic and rhythmic differences after the first two measures of their respective 'A' sections, and Black Coffee has a unique bridge section that has no parallel in Morning Glory. However, during her piano solo, Williams plays both the identical feel and harmonies that appear on Black Coffee, with dominant chords moving up and down by half steps in lieu of staying on the tonic chord. While not a carbon copy, Burke and Webster arguably picked sections of What's Your Story Morning Glory to string together to create a new song. Coincidentally, jazz trumpeter Paul Webster (no relation to lyricist Paul Francis Webster) was given co-writer credit for Morning Glory by Williams when she published her song in 1938.My dear friend, Sam Harrill, has added his percussion magic some years later, and I am re-posting this for greater effect. Nothing in the brass parts changed. Thank you, Sam!
